Receiving the Light of Christ ( Saint Seraphim of Sarov )
Our aim is to know God in a direct way, not intellectually or through reason. This is often referred to as receiving the light of Christ. When we receive this light we experience a sense of joy. When it is a light sent by the devil we feel a bit of agitation or obscureness.
Saint Seraphim says,
The Christian heart, when it has received something divine, does not demand anything else in order to convince it that this is precisely from the Lord...
Saint Seraphim also gives many pointers about how to prepare to receive this gift of light.
He says,
To receive and behold in the heart the light of Christ, one must, as far as possible, divert one's attention away from the visible objects. Having purified the soul beforehand by repentance and good deeds, and with faith in the Crucified, having closed the bodily eyes, immerse the mind within the heart, in which place cry out with the invocation of the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; and then, to the measure of one's zeal and warmth of spirit toward the Beloved, a man finds in the invoked name a delight which awakens the desire to seek higher illumination.
What is important to remember that this gift comes after we have purified our heart and soul of its attachment to the passions of the body and one is committed to a life of ongoing repentance and good deeds, including participation in the sacraments of the Church.
Saint Seraphim goes on to describe this gift.
When a man beholds the eternal light interiorly, his mind is pure and has no sensory representations, but, being totally immersed in contemplation of uncreated goodness, he forgets everything sensory and wishes not even to see himself; he desires rather to hide himself in the heart of the earth if only he not be deprived of this true good--God.This is the gift that is available to all who are willing to cooperate with God and undertake the necessary preparation.

Heart must be soft, the heart must be warm ( Father Seraphim Rose )
We should not think we can be hard and cold and correct and still be Christians. Being correct is external side of Christianity. It's important but not of first importance. Of primary importance is the heart. The heart must be soft, the heart must be warm. If we do not have this warm heart, we have to ask God to give it, and we have to try ourselves to do those things by which we can acquire it.
One thing that can save us is simplicity. It can be ours in our hearts if we pray to God to make us simple; if we just do not think of ourselves so wise...
As soon as you begin to hear or think to yourself critical statements [about people in the Church], you have to stop and warn yourself that, even it its true––because often those statements are true to some degree––this critical attitude is a very negative thing. It will not get you anywhere. ...remember not to judge, not to think you're so wise that you know better. On the contrary, try to learn perhaps without words, from some of those people whom you might be critical of....
If we follow the simple path––distrusting our own wisdom, doing the best we can with our mind, yet realizing that our mind, without warmth of heart, is a very weak tool––then an Orthodox philosophy of life will begin to be formed in us.
Father Seraphim Rose
Being patient ( Fr. Seraphim Rose )
"By taking one small step at a time, and nobody not thinking that in one big step we are going to get any place, we can walk straight to the Kingdom of Heaven––and there is no reason for any of us to fall away from that ."
Fr. Seraphim Rose
How to live a spiritual life ( Saint Theophan the Recluse. )
Our life is said to be spiritual when the spirit has supremacy over the other aspects of our being, according to Saint Theophan the Recluse.
What is Spirit? Saint Theophan says that spirit is “that force which God breathed into man when he created him.” It combined with the soul and raised the soul in humans above al other of His creation. He says, “The Spirit, as a force which has come from God, knows God, seeks God, and in Him alone finds rest.”
Our being is also made up of soul and body. The body has a digestive system to nourish it, a muscular-skeletal system for movement and a nervous system to connect our five senses to our body so it can interact with the external world. The soul is intermixed with this physical aspect. The body, however, puts great demands on the soul to meet its needs and restricts its freedom. He says, “The minds and spirits... are inevitably famished, if not completely deadened, stopped up and immersed in sensuality.”
Our soul has three aspects: intellectual (imagination, memory, and intellect), desirous (will) and heart (sense).
Our intellect is subject to wandering and distraction. He says, “Thoughts rise up one after the other, they form into a line, then they intersect each other, are a few steps forward, then go backward, then run sideways, never stopping for anything. This is not reasoning; it is wandering and scattering of thoughts, this state is the complete opposite of what our intellectual faculty is supposed to be. That is its illness, which is so inculcated in it and so endemic to everyone, that it would be impossible to find a single human being who is capable of continuously conducting the substantial labor of thinking.”
Our desirous aspect thirsts for what is pleasant and beneficial. Its purpose is to control our life, but because of “wandering and scattering of thoughts” we find it preoccupied with “inconsistency, disorder, and selfish desires.”
The heart is the center of our being and senses the condition of the soul and body providing motivation to please it. With sobriety it is calm and undisturbed, but with distraction from the intellectual part and inconsistent desires from the desirous parts the heart has no peace.
The normal life today is one driven by physical desires, scattered thoughts and selfish desires. St. Theophan says,
“a person receives a particular character according to the kind of life he lives, and this character is reflected in his views and attitudes, his habits, and his feelings. That is, his life is either spiritual, with spiritual views, habits and feelings; or it is intellectual, with intellectual concepts, habits and feelings; or it is carnal with carnal thoughts, deeds and feelings…. The straying of thoughts, inconsistency of passionate desires, and uneasiness of the heart constantly disturbs us, not allowing us to a single thing as we should, and nearly always leading us astray…. Please take note of this illness of ours… Do not put entirely out of your mind the idea that within you there is always present something which is not good, which is always ready to divert you from the right way and to mislead you.”
We live a spiritual life when the spirit has command of all aspects of our being. When this is true we do not err. This is the norm of human life, says St. Theophan. Living a spiritual life, one is a real person, different than the unnatural intellectual or canal person. When the spirit reigns the soul seeks only what is beautiful in this world and in the invisible world. In the soul the intellectual part yearns for the ideal, never being satisfied but strives for the “significance of each sphere of things in the overall sum of creation.” The desirous part seeks unselfish deeds or virtuous actions. The heart has a yearning for the love of the beautiful. The soul then seeks only what is desirous by God, being bound together in harmony with the soul and body.
A spiritual life is one where the spirt harmonizes the physical demands of the body and the actions of the soul to live as God created us. Spirt of necessity takes on the leading role. It does not negate the other aspects of our being, the intellectual and physical, but puts them all in the proper perspective and under proper control. It is a life where the “spiritual predominates, subordinating to itself and penetrating the intellectual and the physical parts.”
This is the main challenge of a spiritual life. We can and must learn how to lift ourselves from domination by the demands of our physical, intellectual and desirous aspects that are distorted and contaminated by our passions and to allow the spirit to function as it was intended .
He says,
“As long as you are not living in the spirit do not expect happiness. Intellectual and physical life, when the course is favorable, give something like happiness, but it is a fleeting illusion of happiness, and soon vanishes… The spirit however, soars beyond the boundaries of all troubles and carries away the person who abides in the spirit, and , by allowing his to taste its blessings, which are ever present, makes him truly and completely happy.”

Διότι και ο ιατρός, προκειμένου να καθαρίση την μολυσμένην πληγήν, θα παραιτηθή από του να χρησιμοποίηση τον σίδηρον, και να βυθίση τα δάκτυλά του εις τον πυθμένα του τραύματος; Λοιπόν, ούτε και ημείς πρόκειται να σταματήσωμεν τον λόγον αυτόν, καθ' όσον η μόλυνσις είναι χειροτέρα. Ποίον λοιπόν είναι το κακόν;
Διά τούτο και ήκουσα ότι πολλοί παραξενεύονται, πως ακόμη και σήμερον δεν έβρεξε άλλην πυρίνην βροχήν, πως δεν έπαθεν η πόλις μας αυτά, που έπαθον τα Σόδομα ενώ είναι αξία διά πολύ σκληροτέραν τιμωρίαν, καθόσον δεν εσωφρονίσθη ούτε με τα κακά εκείνων;
Και εδώ πάλιν ο λόγος είναι ο ίδιος. Διατί τάχα οι πρώτοι άνθρωποι, όταν ούτε δικαστήρια υπήρχον, ούτε φόβος υπήρχε από τους άρχοντας, ούτε νόμος να τους απειλή, ούτε όμιλος προφητών δια να τους επαναφέρη εις τάξιν, ούτε φόβος κολάσεως, ούτε ελπίς βασιλείας αιωνίου, ούτε άλλη γνώσις αληθείας, ούτε και τα θαύματα, που ημπορούν να αναστήσουν και τους λίθους, πώς λοιπόν αυτοί, που δεν απήλαυσαν τίποτε από αυτά, ετιμωρήθησαν τόσον αυστηρά διά τας αμαρτίας των και αυτοί, που έχουν συμμετάσχει εις όλα αυτά και ζουν μέσα εις τόσον φόβον και θείων και ανθρωπίνων δικαστηρίων, δεν ετιμωρήθησαν ακόμη μέχρι σήμερον με τας αυτάς τιμωρίας, ενώ είναι άξιοι σκληροτέρας τιμωρίας;
Αρα, δεν είναι ευνόητον και εις ένα παιδί, ότι τους επιφυλάσσεται αυστηροτέρα τιμωρία; Διότι, εάν εμείς οργιζώμεθα έτσι και αγανακτώμεν, ο Θεός, που φροντίζει δι' όλα και ιδιαιτέρως δια το ανθρώπινον γένος και αποστρέφεται και μισεί σφοδρώς την κακίαν, πώς θα ηνείχετο να αποτολμώνται αυτά χωρίς τιμωρίαν;
Διότι και εάν έπρεπε να μεταφέρουν τα παιδιά των εξορία εις ξένην χώραν εξ αιτίας του πάθους αυτού, είτε εις την θάλασσαν, είτε εις τας νήσους, είτε εις απάτητον γην, είτε εις την υπεράνω ημών οικουμένην, δεν θα έπρεπε να κάνουν το παν και να προσπαθήσουν, ώστε να μη συρθούν αυταί αι αισχρότητες;
Και πόσης οργής άξια δεν είναι αυτά και πόσων κεραυνών, όταν το μεν λεκτικόν αυτών προσπαθούμεν να το διορθώσωμεν και να τα καθαρίσωμεν δια της κοσμικής σοφίας, την δε ψυχήν, που κείται μέσα εις τον βόρβορον της ασελγείας και σαπίζει διαρκώς, όχι μόνον παραμελούμεν, αλλά και όταν θέλη να ανορθωθή, την εμποδίζωμεν;
Νομίζομεν δε ότι θα προκύψη καλλιέργεια συμπεριφοράς και ορθότητος αρίστου βίου, ενώ υπάρχουν τόσον πολλά, που την διακόπτουν; Και τί χειρότερον θα ηδύνατο να γίνη από τον παραλογισμόν αυτόν;
Το μεν ευκολώτερον δηλαδή να γίνεται αντικείμενον τόσον μεγάλης τιμής και επιμελείας, ωσάν να μη είναι δυνατόν χωρίς αυτήν να κατορθωθή ποτέ αυτό, εκείνο δε που είναι δυσκολώτερον, τούτο να νομίζωμεν ότι θα μας έλθη ενώ κοιμούμεθα, ως να ήτο κάτι από τα ευτελή και μηδαμινά; Διότι η παίδευσις της ψυχής είναι έργον τόσον δυσκολώτερον και επιπλέον, όσον το να πράττη κανείς από το να λέγη και όσον τα έργα είναι κοπιαστικώτερα των λόγων. Και ποίαν ανάγκην έχουν τα παιδιά μας, λέγει, από την φιλοσοφίαν και ορθότητα βίου; Πράγματι αυτό είναι· αυτό είναι εκείνο, που κατέστρεψε τα πάντα, ότι δηλαδή πράγμα τόσον αναγκαίον, που συγκρατεί την ζωήν μας, θεωρείται περιττόν και πάρεργον. Κανείς δεν θα έλεγε, εάν έβλεπε τον υιόν του να ασθενή κατά το σώμα, ποίαν ανάγκην έχει από καθαράν και ακριβή υγείαν;

THE VALUE OF PATIENCE(PART 2) —by St. John Chrysostom—
They who endure misfortune without complaining
are rewarded even more than them who eagerly do good deeds. Job is proof of this; for he became known to the world more on account of the trials he suffered than on his virtuous accomplishments. Everyone, of course, admired him when he was living happily and carrying out good works. What exactly did he do? He himself describes his actions:
“For I saved the poor from the hand of the oppressor and helped the orphan who had no helper. The perishing man and the widow’s mouth blessed me for standing by them. I put on righteousness and clothed myself with judgment like a robe. I was the eye of the blind and the foot of the lame” (Job 29:12-15). Nevertheless, if the entire world knows him today, after so many
centuries, it is not because he distributed his wealth to the poor but because when he lost his wealth he did not become disheartened; it is not because he
clothed the naked with garments fabricated from the wool of his sheep but because when fire fell from the sky and burnt his entire flock he glorified God.
Initially,he was compassionate as he cared for the poor; later, he became a philosopher as he glorified God for his misfortune. Initially he would help others; afterwards, he praised the Lord. He didn’t think to himself, “Why did this happen to me? Why did I lose my flocks and livestock, which provided food to thousands of poor people?
If I was unworthy of enjoying such wealth, why didn’t God at least spare my sheep for the poor?” No such thought crossed Job’s mind. On the
contrary, realizing that God allows everything to take place for our own benefit, He thanked the Lord. It is not so extraordinary if someone thanks God when everything is going his way; rather, it is truly wondrous, extraordinary, and praiseworthy when someone patiently and gratefully endures even the harshest trials and difficulties.
If they who have become rich by taking advantage of others and unjust means are overcome with sadness when they lose even a small portion of their
wealth, how much praise is due to Job who did not lose his faith in God and did not stop thanking Him, when he witnessed all his possessions—which he had acquired justly with his own sweat disappearing in one fell swoop?
Not one person was there to encourage or support him! Even his wife, swayed by the pain of her soul,
pierced him with her bitter and discouraging words:
“How long will you continue being patient?” she would ask. “How long will you wait and hope for
your suffering to come to an end? Look! Your memory has been wiped out from the earth! Your sons and daughters, whom I gave birth to with pangs and whom I raised with such difficulty have perished. You yourself are sitting on a dunghill full
of worms, spending your nights in the open air without a roof over your head.
I, on the other hand, go about as a wanderer and a beggar from place to place and from house to house, waiting for the sun to set in order to rest from the labors and pains that now beset me.
Go ahead! Blaspheme God and die!” (Job 2:9-14).
The words of this woman in desperation could have
shattered a rock—but not Job. If we consider how frequently men who suffer no hardship are beguiled
by women, then we can understand how courageous and God-loving Job was, who remained vigilant and uninfluenced by his wife’s lamenting and reasoning, even though he had been struck by so many afflictions.
“Why have you spoken as one of the foolish women?” he sternly replied.
“If we accepted good things from the Lord’s hand, shall we not endure evil things?” (Job. 2:15).
Through his response, this blessed man shows us that he was no less inferior than Christ’s Apostles. I dare say he was even superior than them!
Because the Apostles received consolation with the thought that they were suffering on account of the Lord. Job, however, had no such assurance.
Moreover, Job was not disdained, ridiculed, and despised by his enemies (as the Apostles were), but by his friends, his servants, and people whom he had previously helped—which was incomparably
more painful.

THE VALUE OF PATIENCE (PART 1) by St. John Chrysostom
If we want to speak about patience, we must speak of the righteous Job.
Job was a God-fearing man with many children and enormous wealth. His name was known throughout the eastern parts of the world. Everyone held him in high esteem and admiration.
Unexpectedly, he lost everything: his wealth, his
children, and his health. From the height of fortune he fell into the depth of misfortune; from distinction to unimportance.
Not only did he have to deal with extreme poverty,
a serious illness, the anguish due to the death of his children, the ruthlessness of the bandits, and the ungratefulness of his friends, but he also had to contend with ridicule and slander. All possible misfortunes fell upon him.
Worse of all,he was unprepared for them. Whoever is born and grows up in poverty is accustomed to enduring difficulties and prepared to live in deprivation.
Similarly, whoever loses some of his children, no matter how much he grieves for their death, still
finds consolation in the children that remain.
Job, however, who had enjoyed life-long prosperity became destitute overnight, and then witnessed the death of all his ten children simultaneously. As they were eating and drinking at the home of their eldest
brother, a great gust of wind suddenly came from the desert, the house was razed to the ground, and all of them were buried under the rubble.
Job’s pain was exceedingly great on account of his
unexpected and utter poverty. His spiritual anguish was indescribable due to the sudden, tragic death of his children. And if that wasn’t enough, he himself became seriously ill. He was filled with painful and
putrid wounds from head to toe.
He then sat on a dunghill, took a piece of ceramic tile and began to scratch them in order to feel some relief. If someone brought him a little bit of food, he would not touch it. “For I see my food as filth,”
he would say (Job 6:7). The repugnant stench of his wounds and the incurable pain of his soul dismissed all desire for food.
How can I find words to describe his unbelievable misfortunes? I see him sitting on a pile of dry manure. Blood and pus are oozing from his wounds.
Countless worms are eating away at his flesh. He has no consolation from anywhere. No one shows him any compassion. His servants ignore him. His
friends criticize him. Even the common folk mock him.
“But now they laugh me to scorn, men younger than I,” he says with deep sorrow. “But now I am their lyre, and they have me as their byword. They detest me and keep their distance. They do not hesitate to spit in my face” (Job 30:1-10).
What a dreadful misfortune indeed! What an unbearable calamity! And yet, as soon as the loving and merciful Lord revealed to Job the cause of his
sufferings, “There is no other reason I have allowed you to suffer other than for your righteousness to appear” (Job 40:8), immediately the righteous man felt such relief that he no longer believed anything
bad had happened to him.

Fear nothing when you have Christ within you ( Elder Ephraim - Arizona )
When Christ lives within you, fear nothing. In order for Christ to live within you, much humility is needed. Mentally fall at His immaculate feet and weep, saying: “My Jesus, Thou alone art left for me in this humble life of mine as light and life. Show me Thy spiritual beauty, so that I may be filled with divine love and run after Thy myrrh and cry out, ‘My soul has cleaved to Thee, Thy right hand has helped me.’ Oh, my Jesus, when shall I come and appear before Thy face? When, O light of my soul, shall I see Thee and be filled and say, ‘Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God!’”
Yes, my child, love humility above all, and then you will obtain Jesus, Who is lowly in heart, as an everlasting possession in your soul. Inhale Jesus; exhale Jesus, and then you will know what Jesus is!
Christ commanded that we forgive our enemies seventy time seven every day. How much more so does He forgive, He Who is the Abyss of forgiveness! If you were able to count the drops of rain and the grains of sand, you would be able to measure only a small part of the infinite compassion of the infinite God.

St. Ignatius Brianchaninov on Spiritual Warfare
For his invisible warfare or conflict with man, especially by means of sinful thoughts and imaginations, the fallen angel relies on the mutual affinity of the sins one with another. This conflict never ceases day or night, but it becomes specially intense and furious when we stand for prayer. Then, according to the expression of the holy Fathers, the devil gathers the most monstrous thoughts from everywhere and pours them on our soul. First he reminds us of all who have wronged or offended us. He tries to present all the insults, wrongs and injuries inflicted on us in the most lurid colors. He points out the necessity for retaliation and resistance to them by demanding justice, common sense, the public good, self-preservation, self-defense. It is obvious that the enemy tries to shake the very foundation of prayer, namely forgiveness and meekness, so that the building erected on this foundation may collapse of its own accord. And this is just what happens, because a person who is full of resentment and who does not forgive his neighbor’s sins is quite unable to obtain compunction or concentrate when he prays. Angry thoughts dissipate prayer; they blow it aside, just as a violent wind scatters seeds thrown by a sower on his field; so the field of the heart remains unsown, and all the ascetic’s hard work comes to nothing.
It is a well-known fact that forgiveness of wrongs and offenses, changing condemnation of our neighbors into kindness and mercy so that we excuse them and blame ourselves, provides the only solid basis for successful prayer. …We must follow our Lord’s example and teaching; we must reject thoughts of earthly glory, success, and earthly plenty; we must refuse joy brought by those fancies and reflections which destroy in us contrition of spirit, concentration and attention during prayer, and which lead to self-opinion and distraction. If we consent to thoughts of resentment and condemnation, thoughts and fantasies of vainglory, pride, love of money and love of the world, and if we do not reject them, but dawdle in them and take pleasure in them, then we enter into fellowship with Satan, and the power of God which protects us will leave us. The enemy then rushes at us with two most grievous conflicts: the conflict with thoughts and fantasies, and the conflict with despondency or sloth. Defeated in the first conflict and deprived of God’s protection, we cannot stand against the second conflict either. This means, the Fathers tell us, that God allows Satan to defeat us until we humble ourselves…
St. Ignatius Brianchaninov: “The Arena”
Evil is always evil ( St. John of Kronstadt )
Fear evil like fire. Don’t let it touch your heart even if it seems just or righteous. No matter what the circumstances, don’t let it come into you. Evil is always evil. Sometimes evil presents itself as an endeavor to God’s glory, or as something with good intentions towards your neighbor. Even in these cases, don’t trust this feeling. It’s a wrong labor and is not filled with wisdom. Instead, work on chasing evil from yourself. Evil, however innocent it looks, offends God’s long-suffering love, which is His foremost glory. Judas betrayed his Lord for 30 silver pieces under the guise of helping the poor. Keep in mind that the enemy continuously seeks your death and attacks more fiercely when you’re not alert. His evil is endless. Don’t let self-esteem and the love of material goods win you over. When you feel anger against someone, believe with your whole heart that it’s a result of the devil’s work in your heart. Try to hate him and his deeds and it will leave you. Don’t admit it as a part of yourself and don’t justify it. I know this from experience. The devil hides himself behind our souls and we blindly think we’re acting by ourselves. Then we defend the devil’s work as something that is a part of us. Sometimes we think that anger is a fair reaction to something bad. But the idea that a passion could ever be fair is a total and deadly lie. When someone is angry at you, remember that this evil feeling is not him. He’s just fooled by the devil and is a suffering instrument in his hand. Pray that the enemy leaves him and that God opens his spiritual eyes, which have been darkened by the evil spirit. Pray to God for all people enslaved by passions because the enemy is acting in their hearts. Perhaps you hate your neighbor, despise him, don’t want to talk to him peacefully and lovingly because he has been rude, arrogant, or disgusting in his speech or manners. You may despise him for being full of himself or proud or disrespectful. But you are to blame more than he is. “Physician, heal yourself!” (Luke 4:23). So, teacher, teach yourself. This kind of anger is worse than any other evil. How could evil be chased out by another evil? How can you take a needle from the eye of another person while having a log in your own? Evil defects must be fixed with love, kindness, resignation, and patience. Admit yourself as the worst of all sinners, and believe it. Consider yourself the worst one, chase away any boldness, anger, impatience and fury. Then you may start helping others. Be indulgent about defects of others, because if you see their faults all the time, there will be continuous enmity. “The plowers plowed upon my back: they made long their furrows.”(Psalm 129:3). ” For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.”(Matthew 6:14). We can feel from time to time the most perfect love for God without loving each other. This is a strange thing, and only few care about it. But love for our neighbor will never come without our own effort.
A real Christian doesn’t have any reason to be angry about anybody. Anger is the devil’s deed. A Christian should have only love inside and since love doesn’t boast, he shouldn’t boast or have any bad thoughts towards others. For example, I must not think about another person that he is evil, proud etc; and I must not think that if I forgive his offense he would laugh at me or upset me again. We must not let evil hide in us under any pretense. Evil and anger usually have many different veils.
Don’t yield to gloomy feelings in your heart but control and eradicate them with the power of faith and the light of the sane mind. These strengths will make you feel secure. Let me not be put to shame, for I take refuge in you. (Psalm 25:20). Gloomy feelings usually develop deep in the heart. Someone who didn’t learn how to control them will be gloomy, pensive most of the time and it will be hard for him to deal with himself and other people. When he comes close to you, sustain yourself with inner strength, happiness and innocent jokes: and they will leave you soon. This is from experience.
Lord, give me strength to love everyone like myself and never to get angry or work the for devil. Give me strength to crucify my self-esteem, my pride, my greed, my skepticism and other passions. Let us have a name: a mutual love. Let us not worry about anything. Be the only God of our hearts, and let us desire nothing except You. Let us live always in unifying love and let us hate anything that separates us from each other and from love. So be it! So be it!
If God showed Himself to us and lives inside us as we in Him (according to His eternal Word), wouldn’t He give us everything? Would He ever , would He ever trick us or leave us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? (Romans 8:32). Now be comforted, my dear, and know nothing but love. This is my command: Love each other (John 15:17).
St. John of Kronstadt
A visit with Elder Ephraim Katounakiotis ( Metropolitan Athanasios of Limassol )

By Metropolitan Athanasios of Limassol
Many years ago when I was at Katounakia [a rugged area in the southeast of the Athonite peninsula] I would often spend time with that great contemporary holy elder Father Ephraim [Katounakiotis], Papa Ephraim, as he was popularly called. I am not sure whether our century will give birth to another great elder like him, a man of continuous prayer who radiated the abundance of God's grace.
When a group of us visited him at his hermitage one day, he complained that he was tired of Katounakia and expressed a wish to go live at Monoxylites for awhile. That's an area near the borders of Mount Athos. It is a valley between two mountains filled with pine-tree forests, vineyards and olive groves. It is a very beautiful area with abundant running waters, an earthly paradise. He said, "I want to go there and rest. Here at Katounakia there is nothing except rocks and prayer, prayer and rocks, day in and day out. I am really tired. I need a change."
I was shocked when I heard him say that. I wondered how it was possible for a great saint like him to have a desire to change his environment, to go to Monoxylites? I could see young monks like ourselves having needs of this sort. But how is it possible that this great saint in whose life God is always present has such needs? It was then that I realized that even saints are human beings subject to the law of alterations.
I heard later that Joseph the Hesychast [d. 1959], the great elder of Papa Ephraim, expressed similar needs during his life. Elder Ephraim himself told us once that his elder underwent a period of deep sorrow and was subjected to many temptations. One day he asked his then disciple Ephraim, "Papa Ephraim, go and bring Pseudo Vasili here to amuse us." Pseudo Vasili was a layman who lived and worked near the Skete of Saint Anna. He was a simple man who was reputed for his outrageous lies. In his presence it was impossible not to roar with laughter. As in my case, Papa Ephraim was scandalized. "How is it possible," he reasoned, "that the elder has a need for a jester like Pseudo Vasili to amuse him? Why can't he do something else, like more prayer?" As you can see, even great saints occasionally have such needs by virtue of their being human.

Should a man send his wife away for reasons of adultery? ( Elder Joseph of Vatopaidi )
Words of the recently reposed Elder Joseph of the Vatopedion Monastery:
“….Now then, today I am forced to speak about this matter also; it is a somewhat daring endeavour, but necessity has caused me to bring up the subject, when every day I hear men say “my wife is like this….my wife is like that….all women are devils…”.
So, I ask: “Excuse me dear fellow, but this woman you are referring to – weren’t you the one that married her?”
“Yes….”
“Well then, when you married her, didn’t you find every love, tenderness and happiness in her person?”
“Yes…”
“So, why have you changed now? She is the same person. Both when you married her, and now. Can you see that you are to blame?”
I met an elderly couple some years ago – quite elderly, in their eighties – who had so much bitterness between them that, if it were possible, they would kill each other. I felt sorry for them; I sat down next to them and began to search deeper and discovered that they had reached that point out of ignorance. They had no idea what Christianity was, or anything about morality – nothing whatsoever. When I sat down to talk to them, I saw that they were quite receptive and they would pay attention to whatever I told them…. Well ! After trying to briefly show them that mankind is descended from God and that it has eternity inside it, and that we will not be in this world forever, and that conjugality is not dissolved here but continues into eternity, they were both moved and they accepted all that they heard. I left them, and after some time, they sent me a letter in which they said: “Dear Elder, it is as though we are reliving the first month of our marriage…..” Imagine that – those who were ready to kill, to slaughter each other…. Can you see the evidence now?
I will tell you of another character, of a proper husband; one that we rarely encounter in our day. But we did encounter one such person. He was in every way a perfect character – a Christian, and a completely social sort of person. He married late, almost thirty years old, not because he was averse to marriage, but because he thought that was how it should be. So he said his prayers with faith, and found himself a young girl and married her. The girl was young – ten years younger than him. Soon after he married her, she began to get into mischief. He pretended not to notice; he regarded her as his daughter and himself as her father. However, they had important business interests overseas and they had to go there, even if only temporarily. So he took her and they went abroad. When they arrived, she became very obstinate, and would say to herself: “He did this on purpose, to estrange me from my environment. I will desert him.” So she just up and left him. She came back to Greece, and where do you think she went? To one of those “casino” places, and began to live the life of a free woman – one who is paid…”
The husband however, from the day that she left him, never stopped praying with tears and insisting – in fact extorting God: “Benevolent One, I will not retreat, I will not leave you alone; You were the One who gave me my wife. “By God is a woman suited to a man” (according to the Bible). I want my wife. If the young girl has strayed, must she be lost? Why did You come down to earth? Didn’t You come to find the lost ones, to heal the sick, to resurrect the dead? I will not budge. I will not let You rest. I want my wife. Bring her back to me.” He wept for two whole years.
His prayer was eventually heard and the young woman came to her senses. “Oh dear,” she confessed, “God will have to create another Hell, because this one is too small for me!”
So she sat down and wrote him a letter, saying: “I dare not address you; I have no such right. If I return, will you accept me as your servant?”
He replied: “My love, why did you mention that word and hurt my feelings? Wasn’t it me who sent you on a vacation and was waiting for my love to return, to my wide open arms?”
So, he went and waited for her at the airport, as they had arranged. When she arrived, she fell down and began to beat herself and cry. He took her in his arms.
“My love, why are you doing this and hurting my feelings? I was longing to see you again. Let’s go home now; we never parted – I was always with you.”
That young girl turned out to be a faithful wife after this….
And that is the stance that a man – a husband – should take. If husbands are like that one, then show me what woman is bad?”
Experiences, Teachings and Struggles ( Elder Joseph the Hesychast )
The Differences between the Trials
Trials (peirasmoi) are so called because they engender experience (peira), since in the unseen war they do indeed afford spiritual knowledge to those who are attentive. Anything is called a trial if it is in opposition to our struggle for faith and true piety while we are pressing on towards submission to God, but they are subdivided into various kinds, according to the understanding of the Fathers. There are the trials of those taking part in the struggle, so that they may make additional gains and progress in their struggle. There are the trials of the slothful and unwilling, to make them beware of things that are harmful and dangerous. There are the trials of those who are drowsy or sleeping, in order to wake them up. Then again there are the trials of those who have distanced themselves and gone astray, to make them draw near to God. Different again are the trials of the righteous and friends of God, so that they may inherit the promise. There are also trials of the perfect, which God permits in order to bring them forward in the Church for the strengthening of the faithful and as an example to be emulated. There is also another kind of trial, again of the perfect, such as those endured by our Lord and the Apostles, who fulfilled the law of communion with the world by taking up the trials which are ours.
Spiritual Fathers also participate in this law of ‘communion’ by bearing the burdens and the weaknesses of their spiritual children through prayers and other struggles which supplement what is lacking in others. There is also another way, according to the Fathers, in which one person may be a sharer in someone else’s trials, and this is as follows: the accuser shares in the trials of the accused, the slanderer in those of the slandered, the wrongdoer in those of the wronged – especially when those who are wronged endure the harm done to them without a murmur.
We shall speak at this point of the trials of those who are making progress as a result of their attentiveness and willingness to struggle, which – again in the judgement of our Fathers – are usually the following: indolence, heaviness of body, languor of the limbs, listlessness, confusion of the mind, suspicion of bodily sickness – faintheartedness, in other words – darkening of the thoughts, being abandoned by human help, constriction in their external needs and the like. All these things, when – by God’s consent – they befall participants in the struggle, give rise to a sense of dereliction. Their faith then begins to be waver, as if the hope which had given them heart up till then had been cut off. But secretly grace consoles them so that they do not change their regime, because it convinces them that the trial has not come from themselves, since everything testifies that they have not abandoned their consistent good practice. After facing this difficulty and receiving the mystical consolation of grace, they turn with faith and yearning towards God who has power to save them, and fall down in humility asking His salvation, which is the end to which they have endured these trials. Such, according to the Fathers, are the trials of those who are advanced and making progress in spiritual matters.
In those who chance to neglect their duties or, which is the most terrible, fall into self-conceit and pride, the trials are different and harsher, in the same way as surgical operations and excisions are called for in cases of serious illness. The demons at first make war on them openly and quite shamelessly and insistently, and beyond their strength (cf. 1 Cor. 10:13). They experience a darkening of the intellect so that they lose the power of discrimination altogether, and imbecility and idiotic thoughts abound; an intense war of the flesh, pressing their will to go contrary to nature; anger for no reason and intractability in whatever concerns their own will; quarrelling on the spur of the moment and rebuking people at random; blasphemous thoughts against God; a loss of courage in the heart; being mocked by the demons, secretly and openly; lack of restraint in idle talk and, in general, a desire for the world and for idle vanities. After that, trials which are severe and hard to dispel: strange and unaccustomed symptoms of illness and painful wounds, a poverty and dereliction that is unaccustomed and defies consolation and everything else that is impossible and insoluble, which gives rise to despair and fear because the heart is devoid of hope. All these things are consequences mainly of pride, and come upon the person who has been led astray into believing in himself; and all these are the medicines for his healing, to make him sober up and humble himself and vomit out the bile of this devastating perversion.
As in matters of grace there are means of assistance which augment our progress both in time and in quantity, so also on the side of error there are factors which contribute to its fluctuation. On the side of grace, when by the grace of Christ someone treads the strait and narrow way (Mt 7:14) of the commandments according to the measure of his understanding, he increases the aid and illumination given by grace if he also acquires humility and sympathy in the service of love. Something comparable happens on the side of error. If impatience and grumbling are added to it, one’s cross becomes twice as heavy if not more. Faintheartedness and lack of hope are the most excruciating horrors of the unseen war, and are reserved for hard and unhumbled characters as the harshest lesson, which is a taste of hell itself and of punishment, a palpable sign of desertion and dereliction. Here it takes the prayers of saints and the intervention of a miracle for the heart to be softened. Many prayers and tears are needed for this sick soul to be reunited with grace and so be healed: otherwise it is inevitable that error will conquer, and that way lies madness and destruction.
O blessed humility and gratitude! Who is wise and will keep thy ways and understand thy statutes, that he may win thee totally and have thee as his intimate companion: that thou mayest go before him and follow him in all his ways, until thou presentest him to thy Master and King, who has taken thee as His delight and sharer of His throne and has revealed thee to us! For he says, ‘Learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart’ (and not just in appearance) ‘and you will find rest for your souls’! (Mt 11:29).
It was not our intention to repeat so many problems and explanations well known from our Fathers; we were carried away by our train of thought, since almost unintentionally we found ourselves amidst the whirlwinds of trials to which we so often fall victim through our many deficiencies and lapses in attention.
The ever-memorable Elder never stopped explaining to us at every stage of our life, in his own delightful way, the aim and purpose of these ‘contractual afflictions’. We saw the movement and functioning of these afflictions constantly within the framework of the spiritual law which regulated everything in our lives in detail. Indeed, how much wisdom is concealed here in those who have understanding in the science of the spiritual life, when they chart their course over this ocean of life using nothing but this lodestone of the spiritual law, ‘the law of the spirit of life’! (Rom. 8:2).

Teachings ( Metropolitan Philaret Voznesensky )
Metropolitan Philaret Voznesensky, the New Confessor:
1. Remember, you are a son (daughter) of the Orthodox Church. These are not empty words. Remember the commitment this entails.
2. Earthly life is fleeting; one is hardly aware of the swiftness of its passing. Nevertheless, this transient life determines the eternal destiny of your soul. Do not forget this for a moment.
3. Try to live piously. Pray to God in church, pray to God at home–fervently, with faith, trusting yourself to God’s will. Fulfill the holy and saving precepts of the Church, her rules and commandments. Outside the Church, outside obedience to her, there is no salvation.
4. The gift of words is one of God’s greatest gifts. It ennobles man, lifting him above all other creatures. But how this gift is now misused by a corrupts humanity! Safeguard this gift and learn to use it as befits a Christian. Do not judge, do not speak idly. Avoid, like fire, bad language and seductive conversation; do not forget the words of our Lord and Savior: By thy words thou shall be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned. (Mt 12:37) Do not indulge in lying. Holy Scripture sternly forewarns: The Lord shall destroy all them which speak a lie. (Ps 5:4)
5. Love your neighbor as yourself, according to the Lord’s commandment. Without love there is not Christianity. Remember, Christian love is SELF-SACRIFICING, and not egocentric. Do not miss an opportunity to show love and mercy.
6. Be meek, pure and modest in your thoughts, words and deeds. Do not imitate the profligate. Do not take their example, and avoid close acquaintance with them. Have no unnecessary dealings with unbelievers-unbelief is infectious. Observe meekness and propriety always and everywhere; avoid becoming contaminated by the shameless habits of todays world.
7. Fear vanity and pride; run from them. Pride caused the highest and most power angel to be cast down from heaven. remember, ‘thou art earth and to earth shat thou return…’ Deeply humble yourself.
8. The fundamental task in life is to save one’s soul for eternity. Keep this as the most essential task, the main concern of your life. Woe to those whose indifference and neglect bring their souls to eternal ruination. Source: Orthodox Heritage, Vol 7, issue 09-10, p 32
St. Tikhon’s Will
Glory be to God for everything! Glory be to God for having created me to His image and likeness. Glory be to God for having redeemed me, the fallen. Glory be to God for having extended his solicitude to me, the unworthy. Glory be to God for having led me, the sinner, to repentance. Glory be to God for having offered me His holy words, like a lamp in a dark place, thus setting me on the path of righteousness. Glory be to God for having illumined the eyes of my heart. Glory be to God for having made known to me His holy name. Glory be to God for having washed away my sins through the bath of baptism. Glory be to God for having shown me the way to eternal bliss. The way is Jesus Christ, Son of God, Who says of Himself: “I am the way and the truth and the life.”
Glory be to God, that He has not brought me to perdition through my sins, but suffered them because of His kindness. Glory be to God for showing me the vanity and emptiness of the world. Glory be to God for helping me in various temptations, misfortunes, and calamities. Glory be to God for protecting me in accidents and mortal dangers. Glory be to God for defending me against the Devil, who is the enemy. Glory be to God for raising me when I was prostrate. Glory be to God for comforting me in my sorrow. Glory be to God for converting me when I was erring. Glory be to God for punishing me as a father. Glory be to God for announcing to me His last Judgment, that I might fear it and repent of my sins. Glory be to God for revealing to me eternal torment and eternal bliss, that I might flee the one and seek the other. Glory be to God for offering to me, the unworthy one, food which strengthened my body, clothing which covered my nakedness, a house wherein I found shelter. Glory be to God for all the other benefits He granted me for my comfort and sustenance. I received benefits from Him as often as I breathed.
* * *
Glory be to God for everything!
Now, my brethren, I address my words to you. I cannot speak to you as I did formerly, with my voice and my lips, for I am silent, and my breath is spent. But I can talk to you by means of this short letter.
1. The temple of my body has been destroyed, and earth returns to earth, according to the word of God: “Dust thou art, and into dust thou shalt return.” But with the holy Church, I expect resurrection from the dead and the life of the world to come. My hope is sitting at the right hand of God, Jesus Christ, my Lord and God. He is my life and resurrection. He says to me: “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me shall not die but live.” With His voice will He awaken me from my sleep.
2. I have gone away from you according to the way of earthly things; I have departed, and we no longer see each other as we did before. But we shall see each other in that place where shall be gathered all the nations that have lived from the beginning of the world and to its very end. O God, grant that we may see each other there, where God is seen face to face, and gives new life to those who see Him, and comforts and gladdens them and gives them ineffable joy for all eternity. There do men shine like the sun; there is true life; there is true honor and glory; there is true joy and gladness; there is true ecstasy, and all that is eternal and endless. “Let thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us, as we have hoped in thee.”
3. I greatly thank my benefactors, who did not forsake me in my weakness and misery, but out of their mercy and love, provided me with their goods. May God render to them their kindness on the day when all shall be rendered their due.
4. I have forgiven, and I forgive, all who have offended me; may God forgive them in His gracious mercy. I too pray to be forgiven wherein I have offended anyone, being a man. “Forgive, and ye shall be forgiven,” God has said.
5. As I have no belongings, nothing remains after me. I pray that those who lived at my side and served me may want nothing.
Pardon, my beloved, and remember Tikhon!

Και τώρα μετά παρρησίας προσερχόμεθα σ’ αυτόν τον θρόνον της Χάριτος της μητρότητος και σαν υιοί προς την μανούλα μας την ίκετεύομε και είναι αδύνατο να μην μας άκούση. Είναι αδύνατον διότι πώς γίνεται στην τελειότητα της μητρότητος να κλείσουν τα σπλάχνα, όταν φωνάζουν και ζητούν τα παιδιά;
Δεν είναι δύσκολο να δανεισθούμε από την οικογενειακή μας πείρα, ζωντανά παραδείγματα της μητρικής ιδιότητος. Αντικρύσαμε κάποτε να μεταβάλλεται η στοργή και η αγάπη της μητέρας έξ αιτίας της αταξίας και σκληρότητος του παιδιού, ώστε να πάρη την θέση της αγάπης η απειλή. Όταν όμως το παιδί πόνεσε, ταπεινώθηκε και έκλαψε, μεταβλήθη αμέσως η όργή της μητέρας σε συμπάθεια και φίλτρο και όλο το δυσάρεστο το αντικατέστησε η μητρική αγκάλη. Εάν αυτά υπάρχουν μέσα στην ευτελή, την ατελή, την διαβεβλημένη, την ασθενή ανθρώπινη φύση, σε πόση έκταση ευρί¬σκονται αυτά μέσα στην τελειότητα της πνευματικής, της θεοπρεπούς μητρότητος;

Egypt Islamists Hold Coptic Christians Hostage, Terrorize Copt Population

Islamists have taken over a southern Egyptian city, vandalizing its Christian institutions and terrorizing its Coptic population.
Since Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi was overthrown on July 3, Islamists have ruled Dalga, a city of 120,000 people, 20,000 of whom are Christians. Immediately after Morsi was forced to step down, attackers plundered Christian institutions, stealing ancient churches icons and electrical equipment and burning the buildings after they had finished.
Father Yoannis Coptic Orthodox priest told the Associated Press that the Islamists' actions were meant to break the Christian population.
"They don't want to see any Christian with any power, no matter how modest," Yoannis said. "They only want to see us poor without money, a trade or a business to be proud of."
In addition to the loss of their churches, many Christians have also had their homes and small businesses attacked, set on fire and looted. One Christian who fired shots in the air from his roof meant to scare off gang members was reportedly dragged off and murdered.
In response, 40 families have fled the city since the violence started. Many of those who have remained have been forced to bribe Muslims to protect them from the violence. Coptic women, often the targets of Muslim verbal harassment, have stayed inside to avoid uncomfortable situations, though many men, fearing for their own safety, have joined them.

"The Copts in Dalga live in utter humiliation," local rights activist Ezzat Ibrahim told the Associated Press. "They live in horror and cannot lead normal lives."
Most Christians stores have closed and some churches have missed weeks of Sunday services. Those open have seen their attendance dramatically falter. In one church that normally averaged 500 people weekly, only 25 showed up recently for a weekly service.
Although the Egyptian army has nationally filled the power vacuum after Morsi was ousted, their influence is weak in the southern part of the country. Since the Islamists took over Dalga, the army has only attempted to confront Islamists twice. Both times they were turned away after their armored vehicles were showered with gunfire.
While Dalga represents the Islamists strongest and harshest rule, their influence in the southern part extends throughout the provinces of Assiut and Minya, where Dalga is located. These provinces are also home to Egypt's largest Christian population.
There is no precedent in recent history of this type of aggression towards Copts, Ishak Ibrahim, a researcher at the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights, civil liberties group, told Bloomberg Businessweek.
"There is a faction that is against the state and its law enforcers and it's taking revenge from the weaker groups, namely the Copts," said Ibrahim. "Probably at no point in modern Egypt was there a similar wave when it comes to the number, scope and patterns of attacks."
"There are no words that can describe the state of panic," said Ibrahim. "You sit expecting that at any minute dozens of armed people could attack your home, possibly even kill you or drive you out."
For all the violence, Christians have refused to respond violently.
"Even if we had firearms, we would be reluctant to use them," said Yoannis. "We cannot take a life. Firing in the air may be our limit."

ΠΟΙΑ ΕΙΝΑΙ Η ΑΙΤΙΑ ΠΟΥ ΟΙ ΔΙΚΑΙΟΙ ΕΧΟΥΝ ΘΛΙΨΗ ΣΕ ΑΥΤΟΝ ΤΟΝ ΚΟΣΜΟ ΚΑΙ ΟΙ ΑΜΑΡΤΩΛΟΙ ΑΝΕΣΗ;
