On the this day (July 12th), the memory of our venerable Father Paisios the New, of the Holy Mountain, who reposed in peace in the year 1994.

There is no man more intelligent than the merciful one who gives away earthly, perishable things and buys imperishable, heavenly things. Likewise, there is no greater fool in the world than the greedy one who gathers things continually and yet is deprived continually, finally buying hell with his collected savings. Those, naturally, who are lost in material things are totally lost, for they have also lost Christ.

Naturally, every person will be paid by the boss for whom he worked. Those who work for Christ shall receive a hundredfold now in this time and, in the world to come, eternal life (Mark 10:30); and those who work for the dark boss will receive darkness even now.

Sensitive people must be very careful of self-accusation, because the devil tries to convert it into despair (through hypersensitivity).
Self-accusation must always be accompanied by hope in God. When someone feels anxiety in this case, he must realize that the evil one has his tail in it.

The more a person progresses in the spiritual life attending to himself, the wider the eyes of the soul open and the more clearly he discerns his mistakes and the many benefactions of God. Thus man is humbled and inwardly crushed, and then the Grace of God — divine enlightenment — comes naturally and he becomes more discerning.

One of Elder Paisios’ spiritual sons recalls, "Elder Paisios always urged us to think positively. Our positive thinking, however, should not be our ultimate aim; eventually our soul must be cleansed from our positive thoughts as well, and be left bare, having as its sole vestment Divine Grace granted to us through Holy Baptism. ‘This is our aim,’ he used to say, ‘to totally submit our mind to the Grace of God. The only thing Christ is asking from us is our humility. The rest is taken care of by His Grace.

So much higher you throw a thing, with analogous power it will fall down and break in pieces. Often we see someone with a great fantasy of himself, but outwardly he doesn't suffer anything to be humbled. This is dangerous. He has arrived at interior pride and gives grades. May God protect him, he's one with Satan.

Those who work for Christ but are prideful pollute their virtues, just as fried eggs are contaminated when bird’s droppings fall on them. They then can only be thrown in the trash along with the frying pan.

As the kindness of God renders everything useful for a good purpose, so too must we, His creatures, make good use of everything in order to be benefited and benefit others.

Those who present the gifts of God as their own are the most insolent and most unjust in the world, for they wrong God and, even more, their own selves. In this way they cause themselves to be deprived of Divine Grace so that they won’t be judged as being more ungrateful and so that they won’t be destroyed due to their great vainglory.

- Γέροντα, ποιά σημασία έχει το κομποσχοίνι;
- Το κομποσχοίνι είναι μια κληρονομιά, μια ευλογία, που μας έχουν αφήσει οι Άγιοι Πατέρες μας. Και μόνο γι’ αυτό έχει μεγάλη αξία. Βλέπεις, σε κάποιον αφήνει ο παππούς του μια κληρονομιά ένα ασήμαντο πράγμα και το έχει μετά σαν φυλαχτό, πόσο μάλλον το κομποσχοίνι που μας το άφησαν κληρονομιά οι Άγιοι Πατέρες!
Παλιά, που δεν υπήρχαν ρολόγια, οι μοναχοί μετρούσαν την ώρα της προσευχής με το κομποσχοίνι, αλλά οι κόμποι του κομποσχοινιού ήταν απλοί. Κάποτε ένας ασκητής έκανε πολύ αγώνα, πολλές μετάνοιες κ.λπ., και ο διάβολος πήγαινε και έλυνε τους κόμπους του κομποσχοινιού του. Έκανε – έκανε μετάνοιες ο καημένος και απέκαμε, γιατί δεν μπορούσε να τις μετρά, αφού ο διάβολος του έλυνε συνέχεια τους κόμπους. Τότε παρουσιάσθηκε Άγγελος Κυρίου και του δίδαξε πώς να πλέκη τους κόμπους, ώστε σε κάθε κόμπο να σχηματίζωνται εννέα σταυροί. Ο διάβολος μετά, ο οποίος τρέμει τον σταυρό, δεν μπορούσε να τους λύση. Έτσι κάθε κόμπος του κομποσχοινιού έχει εννέα σταυρούς, που συμβολίζουν τα εννέα τάγματα των Αγγέλων.
- Γέροντα, τι σημαίνουν οι τριάντα τρεις, οι πενήντα, οι εκατό και οι τριακόσιοι κόμποι που έχουν τα κομποσχοίνια;
- Μόνον ο αριθμός τριάντα τρία είναι συμβολικός συμβολίζει τα τριάντα τρία χρόνια που έζησε ο Χριστός επάνω στην γη. Οι άλλοι αριθμοί απλώς μας βοηθούν να μετράμε τις μετάνοιες που κάνουμε ή πόσες φορές θα πούμε την ευχή.
Μερικές μηχανές έχουν ένα σχοινί με μια χειρολαβή στην άκρη και, όταν θέλης να τις βάλης μπρος, τραβάς μερικές φορές το σχοινί με δύναμη, μέχρι να ξεπαγώσουν τα πνευματικά λάδια. Έτσι και το κομποσχοίνι είναι το σχοινί το οποίο τραβάμε μία - δύο - πέντε - δέκα φορές και ξεπαγώνουν τα πνευματικά λάδια και παίρνει μπρος η πνευματική μηχανή της αδιάλειπτου προσευχής, οπότε δουλεύει μετά μόνη της η καρδιά στην ευχή. Αλλά, και όταν η καρδιά πάρη μπρος στην ευχή, και πάλι δεν πρέπει να καταργήσουμε το κομποσχοίνι, για να μην παρακινηθούν και άλλοι να το καταργήσουν, ενώ δεν πήρε ακόμη μπρος η καρδιά τους στην ευχή.
- Όταν, Γέροντα, κρατώ το κομποσχοίνι μου και λέω την ευχή μηχανικά, μήπως υπάρχει κίνδυνος ανθρωπαρέσκειας;
- Αν κάνης κομποσχοίνι εξωτερικά από ανθρωπαρέσκεια, ακόμη και τα χέρια σου να ξεφλουδίσης, σε τίποτε δεν θα σε ωφελήση. Μόνον κούραση θα σου φέρη και την ψευδαίσθηση ότι δήθεν ασχολείσαι με την νοερά προσευχή.
- Γέροντα, εγώ δεν έχω συνηθίσει να κρατώ κομποσχοίνι.
- Το κομποσχοίνι να το κρατάς, για να μην ξεχνάς την ευχή, την οποία πρέπει να εργάζεσαι εσωτερικά, στην καρδιά. Όταν μάλιστα βγαίνης από το κελλί σου, να θυμάσαι ότι ο εχθρός είναι έτοιμος για επίθεση. Γι’ αυτό, να μιμήσαι τον καλό στρατιώτη που βγαίνοντας από το πολυβολείο έχει πάντοτε «ανά χείρας» το αυτόματο όπλο. Το κομποσχοίνι έχει μεγάλη δύναμη είναι το όπλο του μοναχού και οι κόμποι είναι σφαίρες, που θερίζουν τα ταγκαλάκια.

Elder Paisios on the Prayer Rope

-Elder, what meaning does the prayer rope (komboschoini) have?
-The prayer rope is an inheritance, a blessing, which was left to us by the Holy Fathers. And for this alone, it has great worth. You see, when someone's grandfather leaves him a meaningless object as an inheritance, he keeps it like a talisman, how much more should we keep the prayer rope as an inheritance of the Holy Fathers!
In olden times, when there were no clocks, monks counted the time with prayer with the prayer rope, but the knots of the prayer rope were simple. Once, an ascetic was doing great struggles, many prostrations, etc. and the devil went and broke the knots of his prayer rope. The poor man then did prostrations after prostrations, because he couldn't count them, as the devil broke his prayer rope to further continue his struggle. Then, an Angel of the Lord appeared to him and taught him how to weave the knots, so that each knot might contain nine crosses. The devil afterwards, who trembles at the cross, could not break them. Thus the knots of the prayer rope have nine crosses, which symbolize the nine ranks of the Angels.
-Elder, what do the 33, 50, 100 and 300 knots mean on prayer ropes?
-Only the number 33 is symbolic, for it symbolizes the 33 years that Christ lived upon the earth. The other numbers simply help us count the prostrations that we do or how many times we say the prayer.
Some machines have a rope with a grip in its side so that if you want it to go forward, you pull the rope strongly, until it warms it up with oil. Thus, the prayer rope is the rope which we pull one, two, five, ten times to warm up with spiritual oil and to move the spiritual machine forward of unceasing prayer, which afterwards, functions on its own. However, when the heart is going forward with the prayer, we still should not remove the prayer rope, so that others might not remove it, whose hearts have not moved forward with prayer.
-Elder, when I hold my prayer rope, and say the prayer mechanically, is there a danger of vainglory [ανθρωπαρέσκειας]?
-If you use the prayer rope externally, out of vainglory, even though your hands start to peel, it does not benefit you at all. It will only bring you fatigue, and the illusion that you are supposedly pursuing noetic prayer.
-Elder, I'm not used to carrying the prayer rope.
-You should carry the prayer rope, so that you might not forget the prayer, which should work internally, within the heart. When of course you exit your cell, you should remember that the enemy is ready to fight you. Thus, imitate the good soldier, who exits the barracks always with his automatic weapon “at hand”. The prayer rope has a great power, and is the weapon of the monk, and its knots are bullets, which [when fired at the feet of the demons] make their sandals dance.

Every single act of ours and every single virtue has need of humility, love and discernment, the latter being the salt of the virtues. This is why Christ tells us in the Gospel: "Every sacrifice shall be salted with salt" (Mark 9:49).

Although the Good God gives us abundant blessings, acts always for our own good and has made everything to be of service to us and to be sacrificed for us, from plants to animals and birds, whether big or small, and even though God Himself sacrificed His life to redeem man, many of us remain indifferent and wound Him with our great ingratitude and insensitivity. And, all of this even though He has given us our conscience as an inheritance together with all His other blessings.

When man does not go through the natural course of spiritual life, namely Crucifixion — Resurrection, so as to experience Paschal spiritual states, heavenly ones, he is more miserable than worldly people. Worldly people can somewhat understand when someone speaks to them about divine love. Those, however, who set off for heavenly love and higher joys, by turning also toward worldly joys (those not considered sinful), remain half way down the road like Lot’s wife (Genesis 19:26). Consequently, their hearts are as insensitive as stone, so much as to be scandalized even by the words "divine love," which they hear read from the books of the Church.

The world is full of pain, fear and suffering. These feelings, without any exceptions, are experienced by all humans. It’s what causes our heart to ache, our mind to go hay-wire, and our emotions to become distorted. People often wonder: How have we had to handle all these problems? Why God allows these tragedies to happen? Some times the questions are complicated and the answers very simple. Elder Paisios of Mount Athos, famous for his spiritual teachings, provides encouragement and support to those who are suffering afflictions.
The struggle to sanctify the soul
..Life of course, is no summer camp; it has joys but also sorrows. The Resurrection is always proceeded by the Crucifixion. The blows of life’s trials are essential for the salvation of the soul, for the soul is refined through them. Just as with clothes; the more we rub them in the wash, the cleaner they become. Even with the octopus, the more it is beaten, the more it is cleaned and tenderized. And the fish, too, appears so graceful when alive and swimming in the sea, or even when displayed in the market with the scales and entrails intact. But it becomes useful only once it is cleaned and made to look less appetizing on the outside before it is broiled. It is much the same with people; when a person sheds all things secular-his scales, if you will- it may seem that he is losing life, his worldly liveliness, but in fact, he is merely removing all useless matter in order to be “ broiled”. Only then is he made useful…

What Helps Spiritual Progress
People who have been buffeted by rough winds, either because God allowed it in order to rein them in, or because of the devil’s envy, are in need of much sunshine and spiritual refreshment before they can blossom and bear fruit. They are like trees that have grown bold during winter’s halcyon days, only to face the cold north wind afterwards; they will need constant spring sunshine ad showers for their sap to circulate again and to blossom and bear fruit.
…Trust in God, simplicity, and struggle with philotimo will lead to inner peace and security and then the soul fills with hope and joy…
Christ helps those who are fighting the good fight that all Saints embraced in order to subdue the flesh to the spirit. Even when wounded, we must never lose our composure, but should instead ask for God’s help in continuing with the struggle courageously. The Good Shepherd will hear us and rush to our aid, just as a shepherd responds to the bleating of a lamb that is lost or wounded, or threatened by a wolf.

Divine Energies are Omnipotent
…God never abandons us; we are the ones who forget and abandon Him. When man does not live spiritually, he is no entitled to divine help. But when he does live spiritually and is near God, he is entitled to it. Then if something happens and he dies, he is read for the other life, in which case he gains both in this life and in the next.
God’s help can’t be obstructed, neither by men nor demons. Nothing is difficult for God or a Saint. The obstacle for us humans is our lack of faith, which prevent the great divine energies from coming to us. And while there is such a great power next to us, we, because there is such a great amount of the human element in us, cannot understand the divine energies which exceed all of the world’s human powers, because they are omnipotent.
We sit for hours on end in vain, trying by ourselves to find solution to a problem, using all of our inexperience. Our head spins, our eyes burn, sleep escapes us, because the little demon has hooked us with obsessive thoughts. We may finally find a solution, but later God will found for us a better solution, which we had not thought of, leaving us with the headaches and the sleepless nights. No matter how right our thought might be, if God is not foremost, the head will tire and ache, while prayer with trust in God brings restfulness. For this reason, we can leave to God those activities which are difficult to achieve by human means and not be dependent upon our human efforts, reassured that God will do what is best.

Divine consolation
…With the people I went through so much pain! I didn’t pass over their problems lightly. I was painted by them, I sighed over them, but with every sigh I turned the matter over to God and in the pain I felt for the other person God provided consolation. That is to say, divine consolation came with the spiritual approach, because the pain which carries with it hope in God also has divine consolation. Otherwise how is one to endure! How could I possibly get through all the things that I hear? Yes, I feel the pain, but I also think of the divine reward in those who are suffering. We are in God’s hands. Since there is divine justice, divine reward, nothing is lost. The more one is tormented, the more he will rewarded. Although God sees so much suffering upon the earth, even things which we cannot imagine, He never falters. “You have suffered more?” He asks, “I will provide you with more in the other life”, and He rejoices. Otherwise, how could He endure so much injustice, so much evil that exists? But He keeps in mind the reward of those who suffer and, in a manner of speaking, endures that great pain. We don’t see the glory to be received by the other person and so we feel compassion for him, and for this God rewards us with divine consolation…

Sins Brings Calamities
Locusts, wars, drought and disease, they are all scourges. They’ re not God’s way of educating human beings but the result of our moving away from God. They happen because we stray from Him. God’s wrath comes to make us remember Him and ask for help. It’s not that He arranges and orders, so to speak, these calamities to happen. Rather, God allows them to happen because He sees how far human evil can go and how unwilling we are to change our ways, and so He tries to bring us to our senses. But they are not of His own making…
…It is good to know that the faithful who obey the commandments of God receives His Grace, and that God is, shall we say, obliged to help them in these difficult times….
Whatever God allows is out of love for Man
-Geronda, why does God allow a calamity to happen?
-There are al kind of reasons. Sometimes God will allow something to happen so that something better may come out of it, and other times He wants to educate us. Some people are rewarded others pay a debt; nothing is wasted. You know, whatever God allows, even when human beings perish, it is done out of love for man, because Goad has a “heart”.

Injustice draws the Wrath of God
Most bad and harmful things happen when we wrong other people. For example, when a fortune is made unjustly, the owners may live a few years like royalty, but in the end, they will spend all their money on doctors. Remember the saying “ What is gathered by the wind is also scattered by the wind.” Or remember what the Psalm says, Better is a little that the righteous hath than the abundance of many wicked. What they collect is spent, blown away. Rarely will an illness, a bankruptcy and so on be sent as a trial from God…

Elder Paisios spoke of various signs of the Times and noticed that we need to make spiritual preparation for the events prophesied.
The Antichrist
…the anticipated Antichrist will, in some manner, be the incarnate devil, who will present himself to the Jewish nation as the Messiah and will mislead the world. Difficult years are ahead; we will be tested very severely. The Christians will suffer great persecution. And, you see, people are not at all aware that we are living during the signs of the times, that the sealing is already advancing. It is as if nothing is happening. This is why the Sacred Scripture says that even the elect will be deceived. Those without a good disposition will not be enlightened and will be misled during the years of apostasy. For whoever does not have divine Grace, does not have spiritual clarity, just like the devil.

Difficult times lie ahead
…with God’s permission, a strong jolt will come our way. Difficult times lie ahead. We will be greatly tasted. We have to take this warning seriously and live spiritually. It is circumstances that are forcing us and will force us in the future, to labour spiritually. But we should try to do so by choice and joyfully rather than by necessity when various sorrows come upon us. Many Saints would plead to live in our times so that they would have the chance to struggle for Christ…

Those who think about the heavy crosses of the righteous, never worry about their own small trials, for, although they have made more mistakes in their life, they suffer less than the righteous.

Greater worth has he who has acquired virtues through struggle than he who was born with inherent virtues and who therefore must double them so as to hear, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant..." (Matthew 25:21)

The devil does not hunt after those who are lost; he hunts after those who are aware, those who are close to God. He takes from them trust in God and begins to afflict them with self-assurance, logic, thinking, criticism. Therefore we should not trust our logical minds. Never believe your thoughts.

Those who, out of pure love, sacrifice even their own lives to protect their fellow men, imitate Christ. These people are, of course, the greatest heroes, because even death trembles before them, since they defy death out of love. Thus, they triumph with immortality, and, taking the key to eternity out from beneath the gravestone, they proceed freely to eternal blessedness.
