Cleansing our soul ( St. Isaac the Syrian )

If men who are surrendered into the hands of judges to be punished for their wickedness humble themselves and straightway confess their iniquity
when they come before the scourges-their punishment is diminished, and with only slight afflictions they are released.

But if there are among them some who are wicked and stiff-necked, who refuse to confess, these are
scourged, and in the end they confess involuntarily after many torments. And since their sides are already covered with wounds, they gain no profit from this.

St. Isaac the Syrian

Attaining Love ( Elder Joseph the Hesychast )

Today, many virtuous people who lead good lives, who please God with their deeds and words, and who benefit their neighbor, think they have (and
are thought of having) attained Love through their insignificant work or mercy and compassion they show towards their neighbor. But this is not the truth. They are only fulfilling the commandment of love for the Lord,  Who said, "Love one another."

He who keeps this commandment is worthy of praise as a keeper of the divine commandments
but this is not an action of divine Love.

It is a road towards the fountain, but not the
fountain. It is stairs towards the palace, but not the gate of the palace. It is a royal garment, but not the King. It is a commandment of God, but not God.

- Γέροντα, μόνον η ευγνωμοσύνη στον Θεό φθάνει για να μας παρακινήση στον αγώνα κατά των παθών;

- Γέροντα, η μνήμη του θανάτου βοηθάει στην εσωτερική εργασία;

- Κι αν, Γέροντα, δεν καταλαβαίνω ότι αυτός ο κόπος είναι απαραίτητος;

Those who are lost in material things have lost Christ (Elder Paisios)

There is no man more intelligent than the merciful one who gives away earthly, perishable things and buys imperishable, heavenly things. Likewise, there is no greater fool in the world than the greedy one who gathers things continually and yet is deprived continually, finally buying hell with his collected savings. Those, naturally, who are lost in material things are totally lost, for they have also lost Christ.

Hope in God (Elder Joseph the hesychast)

Question yourself as to whether this faith is within you, or perhaps you are led by worldly wisdom. And if you leave all things in the hands of God, behold! You have acquired faith and undoubtedly, without any question, you will find God to be your helper. And so, even should you be tried a myriad of times and should satan tempt you to abandon faith, prefer death a thousand times more and don’t obey worldly wisdom. In this way the door of the mysteries will be opened to you and you will be amazed how the chains of worldly wisdom previously bound you. Now you will fly with divine wings above the earth and breathe the new air of freedom, which, of course, others are deprived of. If, however, you see that within you, you are governed by worldly wisdom, and in the smallest danger you lose hope and despair, know that you have not yet acquired faith, and consequently also hope, in God.

Elder Joseph the Hesychast

Performing the Jesus Prayer ( St. Paisius Velichkovsky )

One should perform the Prayer of Jesus aloud but not loudly, sufficient so that one can hear it. One should not at the time of prayer incline one's thought here and there to worldly , corruptible
things, but should remain without laziness in the memory of this Prayer alone. The Prayer is nothing else but a division between the visible and
invisible worlds. Wherefore, one must enclose one's mind in the Prayer.

Where the body stands, there also the mind
should be with it, without having any thought at the time of prayer. The Holy Fathers say, "If anyone prays with his lips but is careless about his mind, he is laboring in vain, for God heeds the
mind and not much speaking. Mental prayer does not allow that there be in the mind any fantasy or unclean thought. If one does not become accustomed to the mental Jesus Prayer, he cannot have ceaseless prayer.

If the Jesus Prayer becomes one's habit and enters his heart, it will then flow as water from a spring. At all times, everywhere and no matter what one
does, it will always urge him on, be he awake or asleep. When his body begins to sleep or drowse, even then it will awaken him, gushing out of his heart and never ceasing. Therefore this Prayer
is great, never left off, so that when it is being said, although the lips may grow faint, and the body may drowse, the spirit never sleeps. When some essential work is performed diligently or thoughts powerfully attack the mind or sleep
overcomes one, then one must pray fervently with the lips and tongue, that the mind might heed the voice.

And when the mind is in peace and calm from thoughts, one may pray with it alone. This path of prayer is the swifter one to salvation than by means of psalms, canons, and the usual prayers....

St. Paisius Velichkovsky

His heart is made steadfast by hope in God ( St. Isaac the Syrian )

As a man who drinks wine and gets drunk on a day of mourning forgets all the pangs of his sorrow, so the man who in this world (which is a house of lamentation) is drunk with the love of
God, forgets all his sorrows and afflictions and becomes insensible to all sinful passions through his inebriation.

His heart is made steadfast by hope in God, his soul is as light as a winged bird, at every moment his mind rises out of the earth and soars far above
the heavens through the meditation of his thoughts, and he takes delight in the immortal things of the Most High, his prayer is unceasing, and he is like a man who has the wind for his steed, so that his enemy cannot overtake him.
Every time he seeks him, he flies from
him.

A terrible accident has a power to awaken us (Saint Herman of Alaska )

A terrible accident has a power to awaken us to the realization of the existence of various calamities and dangers surrounding us, from which the Providence of God preserves us. At the same time it convincingly persuades us to acknowledge our own infirmity and weakness and to seek the Father's protection and His most powerful defense, which affirms us in the Wisdom and the Word of God, which came down from above by the will of the Heavenly Father under a curtain of flesh like ours, woven by the Divine Might from the Immaculate Virgin, for our salvation. He became man and taught us to pray that we be not led into temptation. This reminds us from what Father we have our existence, and this in turn should make us seek our heavenly Fatherland and our eternal inheritance.

Saint Herman of Alaska

Man is not only reason but also heart (Saint Nektarios of Aegina)

Man is not only reason but also heart. The powers of these two centers, mutually assisting one another, render man perfect and teach him what he could never learn through reason alone. If reason teaches about the natural world, the heart teaches us about the supernatural world... Man is perfect when he has developed both his heart and his intellect. Now the heart is developed through revealed religion
