God is everywhere. ( Elder Joseph the Hesychast )
“God is everywhere. There is no place God is not…You cry out to Him, ‘Where art Thou, my God?’ And He answers, “I am present, my child! I am always beside you.’ Both inside and outside, above and below, wherever you turn, everything shouts, ‘God!’ In Him we live and move.
We breathe God, we eat God, we clothe ourselves with God. Everything praises and blesses God. All of creation shouts His praise. Everything animate and inanimate speaks wondrously and glorifies the Creator. Let every breath praise the Lord!”

The longer you wait to seek forgiveness, the more you allow the evil one to spread his roots within you. ( Elder Joseph the Hesychast )
I received your letter, my child, and I saw your anxiety. But don’t be sad, my child. Don’t worry so much. Even though you have fallen again, get up again. You have been called to a heavenly road. It is not surprising for someone running to stumble. It just takes patience and repentance at every moment.
Therefore, always do a metanoia when you are wrong and don’t lose time, because the longer you wait to seek forgiveness, the more you allow the evil one to spread his roots within you. Don’t let him make roots to your detriment.
Therefore, don’t despair when you fall, but get up eagerly and do a metanoia saying, “Forgive me, my dear Christ. I am human and weak.” The Lord has not abandoned you. But since you still have a great deal of worldly pride, a great deal of vainglory, our Christ lets you make mistakes and fall, so that you perceive and come to know your weakness every day, so that you become patient with others who make mistakes, and so that you do not judge the brethren when they make mistakes, but rather put up with them.
So every time you fall, get up again and at once seek forgiveness. Don’t hide sorrow in your heart, because sorrow and despondency are the joy of the evil one. They fill one’s soul with bitterness and give birth to many evils. Whereas the frame of mind of someone who repents says, “I have sinned! Forgive me Father!” and he expels the sorrow. He says, “Am I not a weak human? So what do I expect?” Truly, my child this is how it is. So take courage.
Only when the grace of God comes does a person stand on his feet. Otherwise, without grace, he always changes and always falls. So be a man and don’t be afraid at all.
Do you see how that brother you wrote about endured the temptation? You, too, should do likewise. Acquire a brave spirit against the temptations that come. In any case, they will come. Forget about what your despondency and indolence tell you. Don’t be afraid of them. Just as the previous temptations passed by the grace of God, these, too, will pass once they do their job.
Temptations are medicines and healing herbs that heal our visible passions and our invisible wounds. So have patience in order to profit every day, to store up wages, rest, and joy in the heavenly kingdom. For the night of death is coming when no one will be able to work anymore. Therefore, hurry. Time is short.
You should know this too: a victorious life lasting only one day with trophies and crowns is better than a negligent life lasting many years. Because one man’s struggle, with knowledge and spiritual perception that lasts one day, has the same value as another man’s struggle, who struggles negligently without knowledge for fifty years.
Without a struggle and shedding your blood, don’t expect freedom from the passions. Our earth produces thorns and thistles after the Fall. We have been ordered to clean it, but only with much pain, bloody hands, and many sighs are the thorns and thistles uprooted. So weep, shed streams of tears, and soften the earth of your heart. Once the ground is wet, you can easily uproot the thorns.

Becoming a practiced soldier of Christ ( Elder Joseph the Hesychast )
For it is absolutely necessary for the grace of God to leave, once a tried struggler has acquired a good taste of it in the beginning, so that he may be tested and become a practiced soldier of Christ.
And without such temptations, no one has ever ascended to perfection. This stage that we mentioned where many fall into delusion is the stage where the grace of God withdraws in order to make us, as we have said, practiced soldiers of war, so that we are not infants forever. But the Lord wants us to become worthy men and brave fighters able to guard His riches. That is why He allows us to be tempted.

The life of Elder Joseph the Hesychast
Monasticism recognizes several venerable people, monks, who, in their time, left indelible marks in the history of the Orthodox Church. We can rightfully say that one of those leaders of monasticism is the venerable elder, father Joseph the Hesychast from the Holy Mount.
He is the reviver and the guide of present monasticism in the Holy Mount, as well as Greece and America. With his small brotherhood: Elder Ephraim of Philotheou, elder Charalampus of Dionysiou, elder Joseph of Vatopedi, elder Arsenios Spileot the Hesychast, and his disciple elder Ephraim of Katunakia he raised spiritual life in the monasteries in the Holy Mount: Philotheou, Dionysiou, Vatopedi, Karakalou, Xeropotamou, Konstamonitou and a lot of other monasteries under the guidance of those ones. Their spiritual experience has an influence in many other monasteries, sketes and cells in the Holy Mount and abroad. Today, according to His providence, God spread all his direct or indirect disciples all over the world, and his spiritual writings have been translated in many world languages.
Elder Joseph the Hesychast or Spileot was born in 1898 in the village of Lefkes on the Paros Island in Greece. He has been chosen to serve God since he was in his mother’s womb. He lost his father when he was very young, and his mother, who was especially pious, took care of his education. Since his family was very poor, the young Frances, which was his name before he took monastic vows, had to labour from a very early age in order to provide the necessary things for the survival of his family.
When he was 18, he left his home to go to Pirea, where he lived and worked. He finished his military service in the navy and continued to work. He was a very strong, brave and clever young man, and working as a merchant he started to gain wealth very quickly. He started reading the books from the Holy Fathers when he was 23. Reading about the exploits of the Holy Fathers and spending more and more of his time in prayer and exploits, he slowly started to detach himself from the world and the disturbance and the noise in it. His heart did not strive for the vanishing and false treasures on earth, but he strived for the undecayable, eternal and priceless treasure of the gift of the Holy Spirit in the Church. He gave up everything he had; he dispensed it to the poor and headed towards the country of the Heaven and Earth, of the Heavenly Empress, the Mother of God, towards the Holy Mount Athos.
When he arrived there, he, firstly, walked across the whole Holy Mount in order to find an elder and a place for his exploit. Like a bee which goes from flower to flower collecting the sweetest nectar, so he used to go from elder to elder drinking the heavenly nectar of God’s grace collecting their spiritual experiences in order to upgrade himself, to grow and be in a communion with God. On the feast day of the Holy Transfiguration he climbed on the top of the Mount Athos, where there was a small church dedicated to the Holy Transfiguration of Christ, and there he met father Arsenios, who later became his inseparable friend and co-struggler. From there they went to the renowned elder Daniel in Katunakia who advised them to choose (find) an elder, who does not need to be a renowned one and to subjugate themselves to him in obedience, since the road of the life in Christ is a tradition and a gift of the Holy Spirit and is passed on from an elder to his spiritual child, and without the blessing from the elder and without the impeccable subjugation and obedience there cannot be salvation and divinization. After that, they found elder Ephraim who lived in the cell of the “Annunciation” and submitted themselves to him in obedience. His craft was making wooden wine barrels. He was a simple, good-hearted, calm, quiet, unthinkably silent and meek old man. His happiness for the arrival of the young novice monks was indescribable. Elder Ephraim was the one who brought young Frances into monasticism in the cave of St. Athanasius giving him the name Joseph.
Being persistent in the exploit of searching and suffering to achieve a greater prayer in the constant uttering of the name of God i.e. the Jesus Prayer: God Jesus Christ have mercy on me, with all-night vigils and strict fasting, elder Joseph acquired the gift of pure heart and the continuous prayer of the mind in the heart very early
One day, being in a state of an especially intense prayer and cry, but also in a spiritual sadness for the fact that he could not find a place for his exploit, he experienced the revelation of God’s grace. In one moment he looked towards the little church of the Mother of God, and there he saw a bright ray of light coming out of the church right above him in the form of a rainbow. In those moments he was totally changed, forgetting about himself. He was filled with light inside his heart and everywhere around him. He was not feeling his body. Then the Jesus Prayer started to flow out of his heart with no effort. It was a grace from God. From then on, the Jesus Prayer stayed in his heart forever, but with not as strong effect as the one at the first moment.
Later, when he took the yoke of the holy obedience, having the experience and the flame of the prayer, he never reduced his exploit. Every night, after sunset, he used to go to a lonely place, and sit on a wooden chair, uttering the Jesus Prayer continually for six hours, locking his mind in his heart. He measured the time of the prayer with an alarm clock, which he used to put away from him in order not to disturb his prayer, setting it to go off after six hours. One night, abiding in prayer he was illuminated by the uncreated Light from God which spread itself so much that it illuminated the whole place, similar to the Tabor Light, where Saint Peter told God “it is good for us to be here”. Later, when he came to his senses, he noticed that the alarm clock had been ringing for a long time, without him hearing it. After this contemplation, the grace of the prayer inside him multiplied itself.
Because their hesychastic life was different from the typikon of the fathers in the surroundings, for which they showed resistance, and in order not to tempt them, they moved to the quiet place “Saint Vasilius”. But they did not stay there for long, because after predicting his death, their spiritual father elder Ephraim rested in God.
They used to spend the winter period in their cell, in prayer and fast, and during the summer father Joseph, together with his co-struggler father Arsenios, lived roving life, having nothing earthly with them, as God said: take nothing, neither a stick nor shoes… and they used to go from one place to another searching advice from the holy fathers, zealots. When they walked, they impeccably held themselves to the silent way of life, threading in a certain distance one from the other in order not to disturb the beloved silence. They ate stale bread only. Father Joseph used to eat 75 grams of stale bread, and always after the ninth Byzantine hour. Every Saturday and Sunday they used to attend the Holy Liturgy in the monasteries where they received the usual meals like all the others. They spent eight years in this exploit.
Later on, they decided to retreat again in “Saint Vasilius” and to spend most of their time in their cells, enjoying the reciting of the Jesus Prayer.
There they built a small church dedicated to the Birth of Saint John the Forerunner, and started to make small wooden crosses as an everyday monastic craftwork. Father Arsenios used to make the rough part, making the form of the cross, and father Joseph used to carve the Crucifixion on the one side and the image of the Mother of God on the other side.
There they live an almost prison life. It was the first time for father Joseph to experience a physical struggle which usually happens to the beginners, and he spent eight years in that difficult struggle.
The eagles gather where the corpse is. The God-seekers, the ones that yearn for exalted aims, gather where there are spiritual fathers, the bearers of the spirit, who like fire pillars and fragrant lilies radiate and scent with their holiness and spiritual beauty. At that time other monks and novices started to gather around them. A lot of them came, but a small number of them stayed. The reason was that they could not endure their strict hesychastic typikon (rules, principles for living). Elder Joseph adopted the rule that he must not refuse anyone, but accept everyone with love until he wants to stay. Elder Joseph especially took care of the weak, the spiritually sick and the ones possessed with the devil, which if they only were obedient to him, because of his skill in the struggle with the passions, could be healed.
In search of a more lonely and peaceful life, in January 1938 they moved to some caves near the skete Small Saint Anna. There they fenced the yard space, made three cells from trees and mud, which were 1.80 metres long and 1.50 metres wide, in which they had nothing more than most needed things. In one of the caves they built a small church dedicated to Saint John the Forerunner, where they had a Liturgy once or twice a week in order to receive the Holy Communion.
Their typikon was as it follows: they worked until noon, then they retracted into solitude and instead of an evening service they recited their prayer on a rosary and did some reading. After that they used to gather for a meal and with the blessing from father Joseph they retracted again for some rest. After their rest they used to have praying vigil until midnight, everyone in his cell. If it was the day for a Liturgy, they had one after midnight, and if there was not a Liturgy the young monks used to read something or they visited the elder in order to confess or they continued with the Jesus Prayer. After that they had some rest again. When father Charalampus became a hieromonk, they used to have Liturgy every day, and they used to receive the life-giving and salvational Secrets as our most essential Bread every day.
At the time of the Lenten Fast their already difficult life was becoming unbearable. The young monks, with a lot of love, wishes and forwardness, tried to follow the exploit of their elder, but that sacrifice of theirs lead them to the end of their forces and exhaustion, so that in June 1951father Joseph decided that they should move the New Skete (Nea Skiti).
There they moved into some cottages in a short distance from the skete. Since father Joseph could not walk because of his illness and because he could not stay without the Holy Liturgy or Communion, they built a small church there, dedicated to Saint John the Forerunner again. In Nea Skiti they continued with their strict prayer typikon. Elder Joseph did not give up his strict exploit but he even tried to make it harder. He went through two difficult illnesses, the first of which he did not even want to treat, hoping to have help from God and the Holy Mother. He got better after a year. His body became one wound but he did not give up his prayer rule. The illnesses, the strict and difficult conditions lead to a drastic worsening of his health. In the last forty days of his life on earth he barely ate something, receiving the Holy Communion every day and tasting a bit of watermelon.
His death was a death of a venerable person. He was informed in advance by the Holy Mother about his death, that he was going to be taken on Her feast day. On the day of the Dormition of the Holy Mother, he received the Holy Communion for the last time uttering the words “to have it on the way towards the eternal life”. He gathered his disciples to bid farewell and to give them the last blessing. He only let elder Arsenios to stay in his cell and he peacefully gave his venerable and pure soul in the hands of the Most-Pure, for Whom he lived and yearned all his life.
He reposed in the sixty-first year of age, but he looked too much older.

Leave all things in the hands of God ( Elder Joseph the Hesychast )
Question yourself as to whether this faith is within you, or perhaps you are led by worldly wisdom. And if you leave all things in the hands of God, behold! You have acquired faith and undoubtedly, without any question, you will find God to be your helper. And so, even should you be tried a myriad of times and should satan tempt you to abandon faith, prefer death a thousand times more and don’t obey worldly wisdom. In this way the door of the mysteries will be opened to you and you will be amazed how the chains of worldly wisdom previously bound you. Now you will fly with divine wings above the earth and breathe the new air of freedom, which, of course, others are deprived of. If, however, you see that within you, you are governed by worldly wisdom, and in the smallest danger you lose hope and despair, know that you have not yet acquired faith, and consequently also hope, in God.

The natural state of man ( Elder Joseph the Hesychast )
The natural state of man, since we have
transgressed the commandment of the Lord and have fallen out of paradise, is the divine Law which was given to us in writing after that exile. Every man desiring salvation has to fight with the
passions: thrashing and opposing, fighting and being fought against, winning and suffering defeat. And in general, he has to struggle in order to stay within the divine laws of nature.
When we abide by the divine law given to us in the Bible---we are not fornicators, murderers, thieves, liars, gossipers, and are not unjust, proud,
vainglorious, gluttonous, greedy, avaricious, envious, taunting, blaspheming, irascible, peevish,
complaining, hypocritical and so on---then we are in the state natural for us after the Fall.

A road towards the fountain ( Elder Joseph the Hesychast )
Today, many virtuous people who lead good lives, who please God with their deeds and words, and who benefit their neighbor, think they have (and
are thought of having) attained Love through their insignificant work or mercy and compassion they show towards their neighbor. But this is not the truth. They are only fulfilling the commandment of love for the Lord, Who said, "Love one another."
He who keeps this commandment is worthy of
praise as a keeper of the divine commandments, but this is not an action of divine Love. It is a road
towards the fountain, but not the fountain. It is stairs towards the palace, but not the gate of the palace. It is a royal garment, but not the King. It is a commandment of God, but not God.

Spiritual journey ( Elder Joseph the Hesychast )
Our natural state is darkness in comparison to divine grace. How much more so when the gloomy demons approach us, which are dark
by nature! So when the light of grace comes, everything evil disappears---just as when the sun rises the darkness leaves, and we can clearly see even the smallest details that escaped notice before dawn. But once the sun sets, the darkness overtakes us naturally once more, and whoever walks in the darkness suffers great damage and
grievous incidents.
Likewise, the same thing happens to us in our spiritual journey. When we have divine light, we can see everything clearly, and the demons flee far away, as they are unable to stand before divine grace. But once divine grace leaves again, the darkness remains, that is, our natural state. Then the thievish demons come and fight us.
And so, since our nature is subject to so many changes, and since in a time of darkness we, without the discernment of divine grace, work many deeds that harm us, and since many times we are mortally wounded by the enemies, because it is dark and we cannot see the enemies that are hiding.
Therefore, we should never grow bold and think that everything we do is pleasing to God, nor should we trust in our own weapons and skill. But we should call upon divine aid and trust only in it, and should say with great fear, for we do not know, "I wonder, is what I say pleasing to God, or do I perhaps sadden Him?" And in times of change, we must be patient.

The most powerful prayer ( Elder Joseph the Hesychast)
Always try to make sure that the prayer of Jesus Christ is included in your daily cycle, your work, your every breath and your every sense. Oh, then how will your heart rejoice! How delighted you will be because your mind will rise towards the heavens. Wherefore do not forget to always say: Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me.
When you chant you will understand the chants; you will have the desire and you will likely have the voice and humility to give back, accordingly, the words of God. Therefore do not do injustice to your soul anymore, but say inwardly the prayer, Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me...
When you work, do not let all your thoughts and strength be absorbed in your work, but say the prayer in a whisper. Then your works will be correct, error-free, your thoughts will be clean, and your work performance will be greater. Go ahead, then, say the prayer of Jesus Christ, so your works will be blessed, Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me.
The Holy Spirit protects the soul that prays. It enters the depths of the soul, has control over the inner world of the soul and it directs it towards God's Holy Will. Only then the soul has the power to say, along with the Prophet: Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name! (Ps. 103, 1). Go ahead and pray: Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me, so you will have the protection of the Holy Spirit.
When the Holy Spirit protects your soul, you feel fulfilled and humble. You are not affected by injustice, irony or praise. You live in a spiritual atmosphere, which the virus of sin cannot penetrate. Only the Holy Spirit can judge our souls, no else has that right. The Holy Spirit gives us new eyes and new reasoning. Say the prayer frequently so you can live comfortably in any environment; Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me.
Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me ...

On Purity ( Elder Joseph the Hesychast )
Our Panagia gives so much grace to those who keep their body pure. For it seems to me that she loves purity dearly .

Elder Joseph the Hesychast and the Teaching of Mental Prayer Which Flowed from His Letters
Elder Joseph the Hesychast
A homily by Abbot Ephraim of Vatopaidi Monastery
The blessed elder Joseph the Hesychast is one of the most important figures of contemporary Athonite monasticism. This monk is sanctified. His life is truly that of a contemporary saint and his disciples have today inhabited nearly half of the Holy Mountain and are responsible for so many other women’s monasteries both within and outside of the Greek land.It is said today by a pious mouth, which speaks the language of the Holy Spirit, that today’s blessed renewal of the Holy Mountain is primarily the common work of Elder Sophrony, elder of the Monastery of the Forerunner in Essex, with his excellent book concerning St. Silouan the Athonite, Elder Paisios the ascetic with his blessed presence of the Holy Land, and the disciples of the blessed Elder Joseph the Hesychast. The tree is known by its fruits.
We firmly believe that the return of Athos to interiority and prayer and generally to Hesychast Theology is due largely to the presence of the sanctified Elder Joseph the Hesychast. As you will know from all that has circulated up to now about the blessed Elder Joseph, he was a man who did not possess the skill of worldly things, was not even a beginner among them. He studied to the second grade. And it is easy to see this if you look at a copy of one of his handwritten letters. But as a possessor of the fullness of divine grace, having achieved by full enlightenment of his grace-filled mind to ascend to the highest steps of Theology and become a perfected theologian. For we know that a theologian is not one who has studied in the modern Theological Schools but one in whom speaks God the Logos. Theology is a gift of the Holy Spirit. The blessed elder wrote concerning this, “When in obedience and stillness one purifies the senses and calms the mind and cleanses the heart, then he receives grace and enlightenment of knowledge. He becomes all nous, all clarity, and filled with theology such that if three were writing they could not keep up with the flow. He spreads peace and complete inactivity of the passions throughout the body.”
Theology according to the venerable Elder and generally in the Holy Fathers is a fruit of the divine Grace within us. Therefore the Holy Fathers view the monasteries of the desert as universities. The letters of the venerable Elder are true theological essays but are written without the canons of syntax and orthography. Searching the letters of the blessed Elder Joseph, anyone can well comprehend the great grace with which this perfected Athonite monk sent them. All the more so we who are his spiritual descendants and have the further fortune to have among us our Elder. He was among the spiritual children of the ever-memorable Elder and very often brings up something spiritual concerning his elder, Elder Joseph the Hesychast.
And we find ourselves in the place above all of the Orthodox Tradition, the Sacred Athos, where the love of the Mother of God pleads for us. We who live in the Theotokos-protected Monastery of Vatopaidi, by the extreme tolerance of the great God, live the true meaning of the Orthodox Tradition.
Today much is said and emphasized concerning the Orthodox Tradition, and rightly so. But it is difficult in our days to find traditional people according to the fullness of the Orthodox sense. It is said that traditional people are those who study traditional/patristic books, and this is not wrong. But truly traditional people are those who have received the Orthodox life from people who possess it and can pass it on simply and unmistakably.
Thus, for all our baseness, we experience this situation and we know personally the great blessing it is to receive directly the experience and skill of the Orthodox life. When our Elder narrates something to us of his spiritual father, our “papou” as we call him, that is for us a great blessing, a spiritual harmony; it is a joy and happiness.
When one receives first hand the experience of the Holy Spirit, he senses in an intense manner that the Gospel is not something that happened “at that time” but is a continuous life, in which is confirmed that “Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today and to the ages.”
As one studies the correspondence of the blessed Elder Joseph, the first thing noticed is his desire, his nostalgia, his pure wish to tell his fellow man to concern himself with the prayer of Jesus. Because when he came to Athos, he set as his aim to live like the old ascetics as he had read in the book of that day, Kalokairini, containing the Lives of the Saints.
The whole of the venerable Elder’s life was his continual meditation in the Prayer of Jesus. He tried to apply the command of Paul, “pray without ceasing”.
Every evening he had as his rule to occupy himself with the prayer of Jesus unwaveringly for six continuous hours. He left this precise method in one of his letters. “I knew a brother, who for six hours brought his mind down into his heart and did not permit it to go out from the ninth hour of the afternoon (about 3 pm) until the third hour of the night (about nine pm). He had a clock that struck the hours. And he became drenched in sweat. When he got up, he worked out the remainder of his debt.” This manner of spiritual work, learned from the Fathers, shows great mental strength and a high spiritual condition. For it is truly rare, especially in our days, to find a mind that can pray unwaveringly for such a long time. The blessed Elder said that to accomplish such a great spiritual feat a person must compel himself in prayer and he emphasized: “Say the prayer all the time. don’t rest your mouth at all. Thus it will become habitual in you and the mind will receive it.”
The Hesychast Elder is one of the contemporary Athonite Elders who taught the details of the practice of noetic prayer, not only to monastics but also to the laity. According to the Elder, all people, without reference to their way of life, wherever they find themselves, and whatever they do, can undertake noetic prayer. The blessed elder wrote concerning this, “The practice of noetic prayer is to constrain yourself to say continually the prayer unceasingly with the mouth. Attend only to the words “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me” and you will experience sweetness as if you had honey in your mouth.”
One who wants to practice noetic prayer systematically should not wait for particular moments which he sets aside for the prayer. The sanctified Elder, as a teacher of prayer, emphasizes: “Always say the prayer: sitting or in your bed or walking or standing. ‘Pray without ceasing, give thanks in all things,’ says the Apostle. You should not only pray when you lie down. It wants struggle: standing, sitting. When you tire, sit down, and then stand again. If you eat or work, don’t stop the prayer.”
The prayer, according to the blessed Elder, is the breath of life for the soul. And he advised concerning it: “Let ‘Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me’ be as your breath.” (Presuppositions of the Prayer: The Warfare of the Devil in this Work) Therefore, great are the gifts, great the consolation, outstanding the sweetness, indescribable the happiness, inexpressible the joy, deep the peace, infinite the love which are received on account of the prayer of Jesus.
The chief message of the Holy Mountain to the pious people of God is: As much as you can, say the prayer. Whatever we say, whatever we explain, is incapable by words to express the depth and breadth of the good results of the prayer of Jesus. To whom is due all glory, honor and worship to the ages. Amen!
