- Κανένας, ε; Δεν είναι ο Κύριος;

- Γέροντα, ευλογείτε. Έχω έλθει με κάποιους φίλους μου. Να περάσουν;

- Αυτή αγίασε, απάντησε. Και ξέρεις τον λόγο; Γιατί ποτέ στη ζωή της δεν παραπονέθηκε. Τέτοιους ανθρώπους θέλει ο Θεός, για να γεμίσει τον Παράδεισο και να κάνει τη Δευτέρα Παρουσία Του. Κατάλαβες;

- Αδελφή, ο Γέροντας τα λέει αυτά προφητικά, ή τα λέει για να τα πει;

- Καλός είσαι. Πας στην εκκλησία;
- Πάω.
- Εξομολογείσαι;

- Εσύ τολμάς να μιλάς έτσι για τους παπάδες, πού πέθανε ο αδελφός σου και αδίκησες την οικογένεια του;

- Δεν μου λες, πόσους έσφαξες στην Κατοχή;
- Ποιός είναι αυτός;

- Μας ακούει, όμως, ο Κύριος; Φτάνει η φωνή μας εκεί;

- Δηλαδή, Γέροντα;

- Στην Ελλάδα θα συμβούν;

- Γέροντα, γιατί μ' αυτόν τον τρόπο, σ’ αυτό το μέρος, και τόσο πολλοί;

Clinging to Christ with all one's strength ( Archimandrite Alexander )

The goal, then, of our earthly life is to inherit eternal life in the kingdom of heaven. To reach it our loving Creator requires of us only that we respond to Him with the kind of sincere, pure and selfless love with which He loves us.

Such love is a spring which flows from this temporal life into the beauty of eternal life. The reason for man's life is to become more and more like God and to draw nearer and nearer to Him. The substance of our life should be the continuous upholding of everything in us that furthers nearness to God and rejection of everything that takes us away from Him.

How can the fire of such love and such striving be kindled in the soul? Once it is lit, how can it be guarded, so that it is not allowed to go out, but rather, as much as possible, it is turned into the flame of salvation, which burns up all impurity in the heart? Man cannot do this by his own power, no matter how sincerely he desires it. The winds and waves of the passions are too strong, and they come from sources hostile to man: the world which lies in sin, the flesh which loves sin and the devil, the originator of all evil.

For salvation, therefore, it is necessary to cling to Christ with all one's strength, to become one with Him. Then His divine power and His love will fill our souls. They will protect, sanctify and strengthen us; they will lead us on the sure but narrow path to eternal life. Christ speaks thus about the necessity of staying with Him: "I am the Vine, ye are the branches. The branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine" (John 15:5). In other words, authentic spiritual life, which brings forth good fruit, is impossible unless one is united in the closest possible way with the Source of spiritual strength - Christ.

Two Byzantine brothers

We must invite our friends and neighbors to “taste and see” the great treasure that is Orthodoxy, for it is our responsibility, as Christians, to reach out in kindness, and with a welcoming smile, when we see strangers enter our temples.

Sts Cyril and Methodius

Two Byzantine brothers, Saints Cyril and Methodius, brought Orthodox Christianity to the Slavs in the ninth century. The brilliance of Eastern Orthodox missionary outreach, as opposed to that of the Latin Church, was in the very use of the vernacular. These great saints who became known as the Apostles to the Slavs, left the Slavs with a liturgical language that was understandable to them. The services were not imparted in the Greek language, as though it alone was sacred enough to be used in Divine Worship, but helped them understand their new faith by worshiping in their own language.

The first missionary monks to the North American came to a land where Orthodoxy had never been. Their encounter with the native peoples was one of mutual respect. They did not greet their new neighbors as pagans, but as a people who’s experience with God was limited, but who nevertheless held to certain truths that were, by their very nature, Orthodox truths. Sharing with these peoples, the Orthodox monks came to know that the native Alaskans did not worship totem poles, but used them as tools for passing on family and tribal history. The monks honored the the indigenous peoples, befriending them, and, most important of all, treating them as God’s children.

As Orthodox Christians, we are duty bound to share our faith with others. Christ is for everyone, but with all the bad press Christianity has been getting during the past decade, it is especially important that we approach evangelism in light of the historic Church. The missionary mind of the Orthodox Church must be rekindled in our time. Parishes must not remain enclaves of Greeks, Russians, Bulgarians, Palestinians, or Serbs. The doors of the churches must be opened wide, welcoming all.

Having unlocked doors is worthless if a visitor is greeted with a frown upon entering the temple. I’ve lost count at how many people have shared their experience at having been ignored by other worshipers, upon entering an Orthodox parish for the first time. Numerous people have told me about being confronted with the question, “are you Greek”, followed by, “then why are you here”. Others have shared their sadness at having been ignored in the parish hall, because they did not speak Russian.

A Roman Catholic friar once told me he’d gone to a Russian cathedral to attend his first Divine Liturgy. The first service had concluded, and as the clergy walked down the steps of the cathedral, they looked right through him, as though he were invisible, even though he was wearing his Franciscan habit. He’d felt so unwelcome, he turned and left.

What kind of witness was this? Have we reduced Orthodoxy to the status of a private club? Do we see the Church only in ethnic terms? What if Saints Cyril and Methodius had treated the Slavs in such a manner? What if the Jewish Christians of the first century had treated the gentiles in such a manner?

We are all called to be evangelists for the Orthodox Faith. Not one of us is deserving of this Pearl of Great Price, if we wish to preserve it only for ourselves. How can we say we love Christ, if we do not wish that all know Him? Can we be saved, in the end, if we wish salvation only for “our people”?

We must invite our friends and neighbors to “taste and see” the great treasure that is Orthodoxy, for it is our responsibility, as Christians, to reach out in kindness, and with a welcoming smile, when we see strangers enter our temples.

Orthodox clergy must remember that they are the first line of witness for the Faith. If we hold ourselves aloof while wearing our cassocks and crosses in public, we can not call ourselves disciples of the Lord, for in keeping ourselves aloof, we bring shame upon the Cross of Christ.

The Lord’s Prayer

by Archimandrite Vassileios,
ex Abbot of the Iveron Monastery

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our transgressions, as we forgive those who transgress against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. Amen.

I have selected a passage from the Gospel, the prayer known as ‘The Lord’s Prayer’, since I believe it is the most representative prayer - the prayer handed down to us by the Lord Jesus Christ.

I believe that the Lord has taught us the prayer He has created; He gave us the life He has lived and taught us how He was. And this is Jesus’ truth. He had said once: “I am the vine; you are the branches” (John 15, 5). Just as the relationship between the vine and the branches is organic and the juice flows easily from the vine to the branches, in the same way Jesus flows in our existence by giving us His entire being. Therefore, I believe that through this prayer we live in Jesus Christ, provided we consciously pray and experience the prayer.
Let us begin by reciting this prayer and studying it piece by piece.

The first phrase says:
“Our Father who art in heaven”
I believe we commit one major sin. We sometimes become demoralized and forget one thing: the Lord loves us even though we are weak. If we hold on to just one thought this is it: that the Lord loves us and that the Lord is our Father.
We normally say that the parents love their child not because it is a good child but because it is their child. Therefore it is a major consolation to us if we manage to consciously accept and feel that we too could call the Lord “Father”. This word says everything. It places us immediately into the Church. Someone could be an orphan, his own people may have abandoned him; he may have lost everything and feel completely alone. Nevertheless, as soon as he considers that the Lord is his Father, he feels sheltered and secure and the entire world becomes his home.
I could even dare say this: Wouldn’t it be better if everybody abandoned us in order to experience the love of the Lord? Yes, I believe it would be. You see the Lord says in His Beatitudes: ‘Blessed are those who mourn, blessed are the thirsty, the hungry the weeping…etc” In other words, it would be better if we were to lose all human affection along with everything else, if only we would feel that the Lord is our Father.
I remember once that I had asked an old lady in Paris- she was Russian- to tell us what a monk is and she replied without thinking that “a monk is someone who is hanging from a string; the string is the love of the Lord”. I believe that this is true of every person. Man is strong in this life; his strength is the fact that the Lord loves him. We were born and we continue to live in hope, because Someone loves us. This Someone is strong even though we are weak.
“Our Father who art in heaven’’. So, our Father is not just someone whom we may see but is a heavenly Father, Who lives in heaven. Therefore, the whole heaven becomes our home. Thus we ought to feel free and at ease. Once, when they informed Evagrios Pontikos- one of the great ascetics in Nitria- that his father had died, he replied without thinking: “Do not blaspheme. My Father has never died!”
Thus in this first line of the prayer, our Lord gives us courage, turns us into His siblings and incites us to call His Father “our” Father. We call the Lord “our” Father, not “my” Father. Therefore the Lord is everyone’s Father and we are all brothers.
“Hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come”
The Holy Fathers of our Church see the presence of the Son and of the Holy Spirit in these two lines. Along with the first line, the Holy Trinity in its entirety is present. The Name of God the Father is the Word of God the Father, the Son of God, and the kingdom of the Lord is the Holy Spirit. (There is an earlier version of the Gospel in which the prayer instead of saying ‘Thy Kingdom come’says: ‘Thy Holy Spirit come on us and cleanse us’). Here therefore the Holy Trinity is present as in the Creed of Faith, where we declare: “I believe in one God, Father Almighty…and in Jesus Christ… and in the Holy Spirit…”
“Hallowed by Thy Name”. We pray that the Lord’s name is hallowed. If according to the Holy Fathers the name of God the Father is the Son and Word of God, then “hallowed by thy name” may be related to what Jesus said in John 17, 19: “And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified in truth”. ‘Sanctify myself’ means: the Lord sacrifices Himself so that they are sanctified in truth; so that the faithful are sanctified indeed. Thus, when we are praying “Hallowed by thy Name”, it is as if we are saying: let the sacrifice of the Son and Word of God be sanctified. Thus, the Lord is our sanctification, our deliverance and our justice. By ‘Thy kingdom come’ we beg for the Holy Spirit to come during Pentecost. The Holy Spirit always comes and the Church is the continuing Pentecost.
Therefore the Holy Trinity is present in these three lines. In addition, we may also find here the reality of the epiclesis made during the central prayer of the Holy Liturgy. There, the priest begs the heavenly Father to send the Holy Spirit and make the bread and wine, the Body and Blood of Christ.
And thus we arrive at the fourth line, which is the central part of the Lord’s Prayer and the central part of the life of Jesus and of our own lives. It is this:
“Thy will be done”
This phrase may be compared to the “Amen” of the prayer. Because “Thy will be done” is the conclusion and the recapitulation of the previous phrases. Earlier we say “Hallowed by Thy name”, “Thy kingdom come”, “Thy will be done” and refer to the Lord; we offer everything to the Lord and this is confirmed and recapitulated by “Thy will be done”.
In order to understand how important this phrase is, it will be good to consider why Jesus descended from heaven. “I descended from heaven to fulfill the will of the Father who has sent Me and to accomplish His work”, He says. And also: “As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me” (John 5, 30). Moreover, remember when Jesus met the Samaritan woman? When His disciples urged Him to eat, He had replied: “I have food to eat that you do not know about.”(John 4, 32-34) “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work”.
I think that this last phrase “my food is to do the will of him who has sent me” is the most essential element which describes Jesus’ life and our own lives. Thus during the hour of His real agony at Gethsemane- the time when an earthquake strikes, so to speak, and everything is being tested- when He “…being in an agony he prayed more earnestly”, he said: “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done” (Matthew 26, 42). Thus, at His most difficult moment, He was the first to say the very same thing He had instructed us to say. And then He proceeds to walk peacefully, in His Almighty way, towards the Passion precisely because He had said “Not my will be done, but Your will be done”. As soon as He had said this, He turned inwardly, gained strength and pressed on.
It wouldn’t be inappropriate to take a look at our own life at this point. We get on with our lives, we make plans, have prospects, have a good time but suddenly we may meet with trouble. I believe that there is no man who has not gone through his own Gethsemane. When everything collapses, then and only then everything rises; only then does man comprehend Jesus’ words “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work”. When everything turns upside down and there is no hope, no light to be seen; when everything is covered in darkness, if this person says “My Lord, thy will be done” he suddenly receives new strength; he rises and walks humbly towards the path, towards the passage, towards the Resurrection, who is Jesus, in a never ending process. Then in hindsight he will be grateful to the Lord not for the happy but for the difficult times of his life, for his personal Gethsemane. These have forced him, through the dismantling of his ego, to freely admit and say “My Lord, thy will be done”.
I believe that the phrase: “Thy will be done” relates to what the Lord said at the beginning of the creation: “let there be… and it was so” as well as to the epiclesis during the Holy Liturgy when the priest begs the Father to send the Holy Spirit and make the bread, the Body of Christ and the wine the Blood of Christ, and ends with “Amen, Amen, Amen”, when the mystery is already accomplished. When man willingly says “My Lord, let your will be done to me” resembles what the Virgin Mary said to Archangel Gabriel: “let it be to me according to your word” (Luke 1, 38). Namely, let it be to me, in me, in my entire existence according to your words; Lord let it be according to Your will. From then on, man becomes sanctified and receives a different kind of strength.
Abba Isaac says somewhere that man can become God through Grace, if he obeys the Lord. He can become God and truly create new worlds out of nothing; He can become totally regenerated; the weak gains strength and he who is dead is revived and lives on. He then comprehends that to say calmly “Lord, thy will be done and not mine” is the real food indeed.
Thus, a true theologian is not the one who goes to the university and gets honors because he remembered a couple of dates and some names and wrote a dissertation. A true theologian, who comprehends the power and the truth in our Lord’s teachings, is the one who says when in trouble: ‘not mine, but your will be done’. Then the entire Lord enters in him, makes him a theologian, makes him God through Grace and enables him to walk forward in Jesus Christ. And just as the risen Lord walked through closed doors, similarly this weak man, who has become all powerful with the Grace of the Lord, gets on with his life irrespective of whether the problems have been solved or not.
Therefore, if we happen to face difficulties, let’s talk to the Lord honestly, in any way we wish, because the Lord is our Father. But in the end let us say: “My Lord, I do not know what to do. You do. You love them more than me and they belong to you more than they belong to me. Let thy will be done. If your will seems to be like a catastrophe on the outset, let it be catastrophic”. Any catastrophe from God is better than any success achieved through human effort. The latter creates a true mess and a real disaster. Thus ‘thy will be done’ is the phrase which feeds and elevates us to another place.
“On earth as it is in heaven”
St John Chrysostom says that Jesus makes everyone responsible for the deliverance of the whole world. It doesn’t say: “Lord, let thy will be done in my life” but, “let thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven”.
Once I visited the island of Kos to meet an old lady. She told me: ‘I do not know how to read and write; I do not even know how to recite the Lord’s Prayer or the Creed of Faith. Nevertheless, every night before bed, I cross myself and beg the Lord to let the world wake up well. “Am I doing well?” “Yes, you are”, I said to her.
See, the old woman had uncovered the essence of this prayer. Because she lived her life in Church and the Lord’s grace was flowing in her existence silently, just as the vine juice flows into the branches, she did what was right without having ever learnt to read or write.
“Give us this day our daily bread”,
When we finally become able to reach our own Gethsemane and say during our most difficult moment, ‘Lord, thy will be done’ without distress, or indignation, but calmly and resolutely, then I do believe that our spiritual stomach is ready to digest the real food. And that is our Lord, Jesus Christ.” I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eats of this bread, he shall live forever” (John 6, 51). I am the real bread, the living bread which came down from heaven. If one eats it, one will live forever and will not die; He already experiences eternal life while still living this life.
What does Jesus mean when He says ‘give us this day our daily bread’? The Holy Fathers explain that ‘daily’ bread means the bread which has to do with man’s existence or the bread for the next day. ‘Next day’ means the forthcoming eon, the kingdom of heaven. Thus, we are praying so that the Lord makes us worthy of the ‘eternal life’, of the heavenly bread, i.e. Jesus Christ, and to offer Him to us- the real food- from this life. So, we wish to be able to feed on the bread of the angels, the bread of ‘the next day’, the bread of the eternal life and of the kingdom of heaven.
“And forgive us our transgressions, as we forgive those who transgress against us”
Let us remember the prayer the Lord offered for those who crucified Him: “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do” (Luke 23, 34). There was no excuse for what they did; but the Lord found one for them.Namely that they do not know what they are doing.
“Forgive us our transgressions, as we forgive those who transgress against us”.
This phrase is somehow more demanding. Jesus does not implore us to beg the Lord to help us forgive the others; instead, we are telling the Lord that we have forgiven them anyway. St Gregory of Nyssa says that it is as if we are asking Lord, the Father, to notice our exemplary behavior and forgive us too.
If by any chance we do not show forgiveness, there is nothing anymore to be done; Jesus Christ was clear on this: “if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses” (Matthew 6, 15). We may be attending religious classes and spiritual meetings, may go to church, may take the Holy Communion, may have advanced in spiritual life, may even perform miracles and yet not show forgiveness. If we do not show forgiveness, everything was done in vain.
Let us remember what St Kosmas Aitolos was preaching to the people: ‘I am distressed because I do not have the time to see each one of you individually, so that you can confess to me, tell me your troubles and to console you with words provided by the Lord. So, because I cannot see you individually, I have a number of things which you must obey. If you obey, you will do well. The first thing is: “forgive your enemies”’.
In order to help them understand what he meant, he told them a story. “Two people came to me to confess, Peter and Paul. Paul said to me: ‘Holy father, I am following the Lord’s path ever since I was a boy. I have done many good deeds, I am praying, I give alms, I have built churches and monasteries. I only have one weakness. I cannot forgive my enemies’. I have decided that this man is to go straight to hell and gave instructions to throw his body to the dogs when he dies. After a short while, Paul comes to me and says: ‘I have not followed the straight path ever since I was young. I have stolen things, I have dishonored women, I have killed people, and I have burnt down churches and monasteries. In other words, I have been acting as if I was possessed. I only do one thing: I forgive my enemies’.
And St Kosmas concluded: “I put my arms around his neck and kissed him. I also instructed him to receive the Holy Communion in three days”.
Peter, who did so many good deeds, has defiled everything with his refusal to offer forgiveness. Just like a small piece of dirt taints a hundred kilos of flour. On the other hand, Paul was forgiving even though he had committed so many atrocities. His forgiveness acted like the candle which burnt all of his evil deeds. Occasionally, instead of giving off Christ’s fragrance, our lives seem to smell badly and we do not know why. Therefore, we ought to offer forgiveness without holding a grudge against anyone. Unless we do this all our goodness and our good deeds have been in vain. That’s why the Lord says: “if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses”. The tiniest thing can help us win the kingdom of God and the tiniest thing can taint our entire lives.
“And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one”
On the one hand we say ‘lead us not into temptation’ and on the other James the Apostle implores us thus: ‘Count it all joy, my brothers when you meet trials of various kinds” (James 1, 2). Our Holy Fathers solved the riddle for us. St Maximus the Confessor explains that there are two kinds of temptations: One the one hand, there are the hedonistic pleasures which are voluntary and lead one to commit a sin. We pray to the Lord to help us resist such temptations. On the other hand, there are temptations and tribulations which are involuntary and painful; these target our hedonistic tendencies and stop us from sinning. Therefore, we are praying to the Lord to help us resist the first kind of temptations which are hedonistic and voluntary. On the other hand, we are asking for help in accepting the second kind of temptations with pleasure since they cause knowledge and humility and the presence of the Grace of the Holy Spirit. Remember what the book ‘Gerontiko’ says: Take away the temptations and no one is saved.
“Deliver us from the evil one”. This is the last phrase of the prayer. The first one was ‘Our Father’. The lord is the first and foremost reality and the evil one is the last. We walk on a tight rope between the Lord and the devil throughout our lives. The devil did not leave anyone untouched; neither the first Adam in Paradise, nor the second Adam, Jesus Christ, when He went out in the desert. Our Lord, speaking of the devil, said: ‘This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer” (Mark 9, 29). In other words, we cannot be delivered from the devil save through prayer and fasting. The devil does not leave us in peace even if we use reasoning against him, just as cancer is not cured with aspirin. A monk says that the greatest lawyer cannot win his case against the devil. That’s why we ought never to start a conversation with the evil one. We just ignore him.
The whole issue in spiritual life is to acquire spiritual discernment in order to be able to differentiate between something which comes from God and something which doesn’t. Here one might say: I am a weak person. How can I acquire discernment?
I believe that things become much simpler if we come to comprehend The Lord’s Prayer. Let us begin from the last point. If we forgive our enemies without reservations; if we feed on the heavenly bread; if we say “Lord, thy will be done” during difficult moments; if we experience the Lord as our Father, then even though we are weak, we will become very strong at the same time. If on the contrary, we always do what we want and we do not give forgiveness, we will turn devil into a lion, even though he is like a small ant; then he will be impossible to overcome.
In other words, a weak man becomes all powerful in the face of the devil if he constantly prays that the Lord’s will be done and if he offers forgiveness without a second thought. Such a man forgives those who trample on him and does not hold a grudge against anyone. Instead he prays: ‘never mind, the Lord is great. Let His will be done. I myself know nothing.’ Thus, he is able to walk away from trouble unscathed.
Remember when Jesus was in agony at Gethsemane and prayed more earnestly, He had said: ‘not my will, but Thy will be done’. Then as soon as He had uttered these words “there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him” (Luke 22, 43). Similarly, in the desert, as soon as He had said: “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve’”, the devil left him, “and behold, angels came and were ministering to him” (Matthew 4, 10-11). The same thing happens to us. Spiritual discernment descends upon us and angels come to our assistance if we pray in this way and if we live this kind of life. We will be able to perceive the assistance by the angels. We will be able to experience the kingdom of heaven from this life. We will also be warranted to say that our lives have become ‘angel assisted’ ( angeloktisti) and ‘ God protected’ ( Theoskepasti). Man, even though weak, becomes all powerful with the grace of The Lord.

Ρωτᾶς πῶς γίνεται αὐτό;
Νά!

O Son of God, Risen From the Dead..... ( Video )

Ξέρετε πόσα χρόνια έχω άλλοτε υποφερτό πόνο και άλλοτε ανυπόφορο; Ο υποφερτός είναι μια μόνιμη κατάσταση. Πόσα τράβηξα πρώτα από την βρογχεκτασία και έπειτα με την εγχείρηση που έκανα! Έπειτα άρχισαν ιστορίες με τα έντερα. Ύστερα, μισή χρονιά την πέρασα με την δισκοπάθεια· πονούσα πολύ. Δεν μπορούσα να κάνω ούτε τις μετάνοιες που έκανα, αλλά δυσκολευόμουν και να εξυπηρετηθώ, ενώ χρειαζόταν να υπηρετήσω και τον κόσμο που ερχόταν. Στην συνέχεια μου παρουσιάστηκε κάτι σκληρό στην κοιλιά· μου είπαν ότι ήταν κήλη. Όταν κουραζόμουν, πονούσε και πρηζόταν πολύ. Μια μέρα, παραμονή του Αγίου Παντελεήμονος, ήταν πρησμένο και πονούσα. Έπρεπε όμως να πάω στην Σκήτη, στην ολονυκτία. Είπα: «θα πάω και ό,τι θέλει ας γίνη», γιατί έπρεπε να πάω. Στην διάρκεια της αγρυπνίας σκέφθηκα να καθήσω λίγο, αλλά είπα «αν κατεβάσω εγώ το στασίδι, για να καθήσω, θα το κατεβάσουν όλοι», οπότε προτίμησα να μην καθήσω καθόλου. Μετά από δώδεκα ώρες που κράτησε η αγρυπνία υπέθεσα ότι θα χειροτερέψη πολύ. Όταν επέστρεψα στο Κελλί μου, δεν πρόλαβα καλά-καλά να μπω μέσα, χτύπησε το καμπανάκι. «Ε, Πάτερ, άνοιξε!», ακούω κάποιον να φωνάζη. Έβαλα τα γέλια. «Εντάξει, είπα, τώρα θα πάμε συνέχεια». Και πράγματι σε λίγο ήρθαν και άλλοι και άλλοι. Το βράδυ που τελείωσα με τον κόσμο, είδα ότι είχε εξαφανισθή τελείως! Την άλλη ημέρα, ενώ είχα ξεκουραστή, πάλι παρουσιάστηκε! Έπειτα με εμπόδιζε και με πονούσε, αλλά και το καμάρωνα κιόλας. Αφού ο Χριστός το ήξερε, ήξερε και ότι με βοηθάει, γι’ αυτό το άφηνε. Πέντε χρόνια κράτησε αυτό. Ξέρεις τι δυσκολία;
- Και τότε, Γέροντα, που είχατε πρόβλημα με τα πόδια σας;
- Γέροντα, όταν λέτε ότι ένας άνθρωπος κάνει υπομονή στους πόνους, εννοείτε ότι δεν δείχνει καθόλου ότι πονάει;

- Γέροντα, ποιον πόνο λέτε ανυπόφορο;
- Τον πόνο που κάνει να τρέχουν δάκρυα από τα μάτια! Αυτά τα δάκρυα δεν είναι ούτε μετανοίας ούτε αγαλλιάσεως· που υπάγονται; Τι λέτε;
- Μαρτύριο δεν είναι, Γέροντα;
- Γέροντα, τι χρειάζεται για να ξεπεράσης τον πόνο;
- Και τον ανυπόφορο πόνο πως τον αντιμετωπίζει κανείς;
- Αν είναι κοσμικός, με το τραγούδι, αν είναι πνευματικός άνθρωπος, με την ψαλμωδία... Ο πατέρας μου μια φορά είχε πυρετό και πολύ πονοκέφαλο. Τι κάνει λοιπόν; Παίρνει και τρώει μια αλμυρή σαρδέλα, πίνει και ένα ποτήρι κρασί και άρχισε να τραγουδάη το «Ξύπνα καημένε μου ραγιά» και άλλα τραγούδια της κλεφτουριάς και έγινε καλά! Έτσι και εμείς να ψέλνουμε, για να διασκεδάζεται ο πόνος! Κι εγώ μια μέρα κρύωσα και είχα έναν πονοκέφαλο, που πήγαινε να σπάση το κεφάλι μου. Άρχισα λοιπόν μια πολύ ωραία ψαλμωδία και μου έφυγε ο πονοκέφαλος. Πράγματι η ψαλμωδία μαζί με την ευχή πολύ βοηθάει σ’ αυτές τις περιπτώσεις· απαλαίνει την ψυχή, την γλυκαίνει, γιατί οι συνεχείς θλίψεις και οι πόνοι την καταβάλλουν και της δημιουργούν ψύξη. Και χθες βράδυ δεν μπορούσα να κοιμηθώ από τον πόνο. Είπα πως, αν δεν ξημερώσω και πεθάνω, τότε θα έχω ...μεγάλη μέρα. Στην άλλη ζωή δεν θα βραδιάζη ποτέ, ούτε θα ξημερώνη... Έπειτα πήρα ένα ...χάπι· έψαλα «Τας αλγηδόνας των Αγίων...»[26]. Αυτό το ...χάπι διαρκεί όλη την νύχτα! Έχουν τέτοιο χάπι εδώ οι γιατροί;
- Γέροντα, ο πόνος συνήθως σε προειδοποιεί ότι κάτι συμβαίνει στον οργανισμό. Στην συνέχεια πόση προσοχή πρέπει να του δίνης;
- Γέροντα, όταν υποφέρη το σώμα, υποφέρει συγχρόνως και η ψυχή;
- Γέροντα, ο πόνος αγριεύει τον άνθρωπο;
- Αυτός που πονάει και δεν αντιμετωπίζει πνευματικά τον πόνο, δεν εξαγνίζεται;

The great deeds of martyrs

When someone enters an Orthodox church, he enters into a special, heavenly world: on all sides he is surrounded by the images of angels and saints. Among these multitudes, there are people of different nationalities, of different epochs, social origins, educational backgrounds and ways of life. Here are princes and simple folk, rich and poor, educated and illiterate. What most of them have in common is that they violently left this world dying for Christ.

Those who gave their lives for their faith are known as martyrs. The Russian word, muchenik, has at its root the concept of suffering, of a violent death. The ancient Church used the term martis, which means, "witness" in Greek. Why they are so called, and what gave them the strength to stand so courageously for the Christian faith, are the issues we will discuss below.

The word "witness" is generally understood to mean eyewitness, i.e., a person who observed (or heard) something first-hand and testifies to it. Legal decisions are made based on a witness’ testimony for the prosecution and for the defense. The demand is made of the witness that he presents not opinions or hearsay, but only that which was actually observed. He must bring only facts to bear. The Christian becomes a "witness" to his faith when his words and his life bear witness to a new life in Christ, a life in which he is a participant. Here the object witnessed is not the external so much as the internal spiritual experience.

The Holy Gospel refers to our Lord Jesus Christ as "The True Witness (martis)." "Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead. … the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God" (Rev. 1:5, 3:14). Following Pentecost, the Apostles and other preachers of the Gospel also become witnesses: "… and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem … one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection" (Acts 1:8, 1:22). "I ... who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ" (1 Pet. 5:1). "I know thy works and where thou dwellest ... the souls of them that were slain ... for the testimony which they held" (Rev. 2:13, 6:9).

Our Lord Jesus Christ said of His mission in the world: "To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (Jn. 18:37, 8:32). The truth to which the Son of God bore witness was not an abstract religious-philosophical system, but a divine revelation of that which He had heard from His Father and seen in that heavenly world from whence He had come. He explained as someone who knew from experience, and taught how to live as the blessed live in the Kingdom of His Father.

Those who accepted His witness, He brought, inasmuch as it was possible for them, into contact with the heavenly life, giving them a foretaste of the joy of communing with God, and helping them to see the divine light. Those who experienced this state of grace in turn became witnesses of Christ — sometimes by word, but more often by deed — in their virtuous lives.

For the Apostles, the religious experience was particularly perceptible. The Apostle John wrote of that which he and the other Apostles experienced when communicating with the Savior:

"That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;) That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full (1 Jn. 1:1-4).

If Christ had offered only abstract ideas, they would have been accepted calmly, and would not have caused the extreme split in society, which we see in the history of Christianity. The words of Christ, like a bright light, penetrate the sinner’s darkened soul. Therefore believing in Christ and accepting His teaching invariably leads to the reconstruction of view of the world and to the most fundamental changes in the way of life. But, at the same time, they act upon a person as a beneficial balm. Bringing a renewing spiritual force for the internal struggle with evil, they inspire in him the desire to live for a higher good.

And, as a person cleanses himself and approaches moral perfection, he experiences the love of God. New horizons open before his spiritual eyes, and he begins better to comprehend the basis of spiritual life, the passing and false nature of all that takes place around him. He understands better, what he must attain and how he must act. Feeling from personal experience his own former baseness and the joy of communing with God, he no longer wishes to return to the old darkness from which he has escaped. Just the opposite — the Kingdom of God becomes for him something precious, "…the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth" (Mt. 13:44), for which he is ready to give everything, even his own life.

Unfortunately, not all are capable of seeing the light, not all find in themselves the strength to part with their sinful habits, to refuse material goods for the renewal of their soul. The Gospel tells us how from the first day of Christ’s preaching, society began to divide into two camps — those who joyfully accepted His teaching and those who rejected it. Indeed, the latter group did not merely ignore Christ’s teaching, but actively rose against it with indignation, even with uncontrollable hatred. Jesus Christ thus defined the reaction of people to his witness: "For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God" (Jn. 3:20-21). In other words, the teaching of Christ possesses the ability to expose the true nature of a person, his secret motivations. A person, who before hearing the teaching of the Gospel has been in a sort of neutral spiritual state, cannot stay indifferent any longer: he becomes either a follower or an enemy of Christ.

The animosity toward Christ held by the Pharisees and other Jewish religious leaders ultimately led to their bringing false witness against Him at His judgment, sentencing Him to death and forcing Pilate to agree to his crucifixion. Thus, the first Witness to spiritual life (Rev 1:5) — our Lord Jesus Christ — also became its first Martyr. But He defeated the leader of lies and death, the devil, and promised to all who accept the Truth that they will triumph.

The Resurrection of the Savior and the descent of the Holy Spirit were the significant events that totally convinced the Apostles of the truth of all that the Lord Jesus Christ had taught, and as witnesses, they devoted their lives to the preaching of the Gospel among all peoples. They understood their preaching to be a type of witness before people of that grace which they had received in Jesus Christ. And just as during the life of Jesus Christ, His witness appealed to some and antagonized others, so too in subsequent ages did Christian proselytism enter into society as a dividing force: "Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man's foes shall be they of his own household" (Mt. 10:34-36).

The first Christian to suffer was the archdeacon Stephen, who was stoned by the Jews outside the walls of Jerusalem soon after the Apostles were visited by the Holy Ghost. In time, in different countries and at different times, all of His followers suffered for their faith in Christ. Probably only St. John the Evangelist died his own death; this was a reward for his courageous presence at the foot of the Cross.

Nero (54-68 A.D) was the first Roman emperor to embark on a course of massive and systematic persecution of Christians. During his reign, the Apostles Peter and Paul suffered in Rome. Christians were fed to wild beasts at Roman circuses or covered in tar and set aflame like torches to light the city streets.

A second-century author, St. Justin the Philosopher, who also ended his life as a martyr, illustrated how Christianity divided society in its most basic unit — the family. He related a story of how, in the city where he lived, one pagan woman converted to Christianity. Her husband, who remained a pagan, was angered by this conversion and complained to a local magistrate. Foreseeing no good in this, the woman received a continuance of her court appearance in order to tend to affairs relating to her property. While she was busy with these affairs, her angered husband brought before the court a certain Ptolemy, who, he had learned, had been responsible for his wife’s conversion. Ptolemy was interrogated, and when he admitted his Christian faith, was sentenced to death by the judge. Two members of the court felt that a death sentence was rather harsh for a man whose only "crime" was his religious conviction. The judge inquired as to whether the dissenters were also Christians. When they confirmed this, he sentenced them to death as well. Thus, in the process of preparing for the trial of the Christian wife, three other Christians were executed. Later, the wife was also tried and executed.

In his Second Apology to the Roman Senate, St. Justin tells us that all this took place because the wife, having become a Christian, refused to participate in her husband’s unnatural perversions, deeming them to be sinful.

Although we know the names of only a few thousand martyrs, their actual number runs into the tens of millions.

The persecution of Christians never completely subsided; however, its intensity alternated between greater and lesser, and its geographic focus shifted. Certain periods of time were especially difficult for Christians. Many Roman emperors and pagan rulers directed bitter campaigns of persecution against believers during the first three centuries of Christianity. After a period of relative calm, Moslem Arabs began a new wave of persecution in the 7th to 9th centuries. The Turks followed in the 13th to 18th centuries. Notice the contrast between the methods used to spread Christianity and Islam: The Apostles came to people preaching love; they were full of gentleness and often became victims of unbelievers. However, from the first day of its appearance, the Moslem religion, spread literally by sword and flame. Finally, in our own century, ferociously anti-religious Communists attempted to root out all Christian faith mercilessly. Every new wave of persecution becomes more murderous and bloody than the previous one. The Holy Gospel predicts even greater persecution before the end of the world.

Thus, the battle against Christian faith is a continuing theme of all New Testament history. As the Holy Gospel explains, this warfare is directed by the fallen angel, the ancient dragon, become the "prince of the world."

But, even having suffered physically for Christ, His witnesses were not destroyed. Just the opposite — they, like Christ, were victorious and now sit with Him in Heaven: "To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne" (Rev. 3:21).

The conditions of death are unique for every Christian confessor. They have a common logic in that the Lord Jesus Christ and the state of grace they found in Christianity became for them the most important element of their lives. "A Christian would sooner give his life for his faith than a pagan would give a piece of his cloak for all the gods," wrote Origen (circa 182-215 A.D), in his letter to Celsius (7:39). To disavow Christ and His teaching meant for them the forfeiture of that which was dearest to them — God and eternal life. It would have meant to bow their heads before evil and untruth in order to prolong their insignificant earthly existence — and to do so would have been a terrible tragedy for them.

Christian martyrdom is at its core quite different from the self-sacrifice of fanatics. Fanaticism is a blind attachment to an idea. Fanatics are capable of sacrificing their lives in order to prove something to others, for example, as Buddhist monks recently set themselves on fire in order to draw public attention to problems in their country. Christianity forbids suicide as a great sin. "When they persecute you in one city, go to another," said Christ (Mt. 10:23). Martyrs did not suffer in order to "prove" something, but to guard the spiritual grace their lives had acquired in the Lord Jesus Christ. To them, spiritual life was more important than physical life.

"For to me to live and die in Christ is a gain," said the Apostle Paul (Phil. 1:21). He taught Christians to accept persecution with joy, as an honor and opportunity to receive an even greater reward in Heaven: "For to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake" (Phil. 1:29).

Our Lord Jesus Christ knew of the sufferings that his followers would endure and sought to prepare them for their sacrificial deeds by saying:

I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues ... And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell ... Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God: But he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God ... And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say. For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say... And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death. And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved... Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin and not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows (Mt. 10:16-42; Lk. 12:2-12; 21:12-19).

Upon witnessing the unshakeable faith of the Christians, the great courage with which they accepted suffering and death, many pagans saw the truth of the Christian teachings and were themselves, converted to Christianity. This justified Tertullian’s comment in the 3rd century that "the blood of martyrs is the seed of Christianity."

So Christian martyrs bear witness to eternal qualities, spiritual wealth and true life. Leaving this mournful world, they stand forever, in indescribable joy, near the throne of God, just as envisaged by the Apostle John:

After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palm branches in their hands... These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall shepherd them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away every tear from their eyes (Rev. 7:9-17).

Through their sacrifice, the martyrs in Christ bear witness to the reality of spiritual values and the existence of another life, far superior to our own. They call on us to struggle courageously against evil, to love God and to feel for ourselves what a great gift it is to have Him in our souls. Through the prayers of the holy martyrs may the Lord grant to us a strong faith and the valor necessary to attain the quiet haven of the Kingdom of God.

Trying to lead us astray from living a God-pleasing life ( Saint Theophan the Recluse )

There are many forces at work which will try to lead us astray from living a God-pleasing life. It is important to continually pay more attention to the inner nudging of our conscience than to external things. This is not to say we should ignore or separate from external events, as this is also a reality of our life. But first and with the highest priority is giving our attention to our inner life directed toward our relationship with God.

Saint Theophan reminds us that this takes courage.

Provide yourself with only one thing, strong encourage: no matter what happens, stay with what you have begun... no matter how life goes, whatever successes and failures there are, you should give all of this over to God's will.When we examine the lives of saints we see that they have been led, often through great difficulties, with God's love. We see that when they devote themselves to perfecting their way of life through God, God leads them to perfection in differing ways.

Living a life focused on God does not necessarily eliminate the difficulties of life in this world. We will surely encounter numerous difficulties, both inner and outer. These are all things that God allows to happen for our benefit. There is one potential danger, however, and that is one of becoming overconfident when we do not encounter such difficulties.

Saint Theophan says,

Those who do not encounter inward or outward impediments and who see that everything is going smoothly began to fantasize that this is the way things are, and they suppose they have driven out all adversaries, who were unable to show themselves. As soon as such thoughts have settled in, the adversary immediately enters and begins fabricating vainglorious dreams from which are born self-conceit, the falling away from God's help, and the cessation of searching and striving after this help.

Therefore, it is important never to let up. Our entire life is one that involves spiritual warfare. We must constantly be alert and humble, recognizing that there is an enemy who is continually trying to distract us from the path.

Christianity and fortune telling ( St. Nikolai Velimirovich )

What is fortune telling? There are three kinds of belief, which have their origin in fortune telling: belief in blind chance, belief in things and belief in the almighty power of the spirits of darkness.

Through fortune telling, events are prophesied, the power of things differentiated, and an oath is sworn to the spirits of darkness.

No faith so decisively condemned and rejected fortune telling as did the Christian Faith. No faith except Christianity is free and pure of fortune telling. Other faiths are, more or less, fortune telling and some consist only of fortune telling.

Fortune telling means to subject man to lower things and beings lower than man. From this, one can say that fortune telling can be called a belief in darkness. That is why the Apostle Paul speaks: "Avoid profane and silly myths. Train yourself for devotion" (1 Timothy 4:7).

Christianity is a Faith of light in two senses: First because it elevates man above chance, above all things and above the spirits of darkness; and Second that it subordinates man only to the authority of the Living, Wise and Almighty God. The All-seeing God exists, that is why blind chance does not exist. In spiritual union with this All-seeing and Living God, man can be more exalted than all things and more powerful than all the spirits of darkness.
